I am going into my senior year. I live in the state of Maryland. My brother attends UMD. I go to an elite private high school and I have a 3.8 GPA. I took 3 AP Classes my Junior year and I got a 5 on AP US history and a 4 on AP Biology and I also took AP Latin but I did not take the test. In my senior year I will take 3 AP classes (Calculus AB, Art History, and American Gov't) as well as Honors physics. I took the ACT once and got a 27 on it. My recommendations should be solid and I have one coming from a professor at the university. I played sports my first two years of high school. I am also very involved in community service and I have been taking part in the soup kitchen at my school and have been a regular there since the beginning of sophomore year. I also took the SAT IIs and got a 720 on U.S. History and a 690 on biology. I want to study Poli Sci in college.

If your 3.8 GPA is unweighted, you’re probably in good shape. Are you planning to take the ACT again or take the SAT? A higher ACT would make it much easier, and possibly get you into honors or scholars. The recommendation from the prof at UMD will be a great addition!

No that is weighted because my high school does not do an unweighted GPA. My unweighted would be close to a 3.6 if I had to guess, because my school does not offer alot of honors or AP to Freshmen and sophomores so my weighted and unweighted are probably not that far off. and I am scheduled to take the SAT and the ACT once more…What type of ACT/SAT do you need to get into honors??

On UMD website if you put in scholars, gemstone or honors it tells you the mins req to be eligible. Do not confuse that with what is the avg, which is typically much higher.

DS had a 4.1 w and a 1390 out of 1600. He is in scholars for govt and politics. Also OOS.

Pay attention to your app. if you say you do not want to work in groups, you will not be considered for gemstone, even if you qualify.

Hi,

I’m going into my senior year at a college prep school in Minnesota, I’m trying to see what my chances at UMD are.

I have a 3.75 unweighted GPA
26 ACT- (30 english, 25 science, 25 math, 25 reading, and got a 10 out of 12 on the writing section

Extra Curriculars: 4 Years of Lacrosse- Captain this year
3 years of soccer, 1 year of basketball, 1 year of tennis
Class secretary for Student Council for 2 years and Executive Secretary(whole school) 1 year
Active in our Volunteer Corps for 4 years, and the Presidential Service Award (100 hours in one year)
Girls Pop Choir-2 years
Environmental Club- 4 years

What do you think my chances of getting in are?

You’re both in; I think at this point the question is whether you’ll be scholars or honors. You might look into recruitment for soccer or lacrosse too, mcannon…good luck guys!

Mccannon what is your major?

Your gpa is good, but your ACT hurts. The fact you are from Minnesota helps. If you said NJ/NY or even MD, I would say maybe at best and that would be kind.

No way do I see scholars or honors, unless it is tied to your musical background.

I may retract it if you say you have 9 AP’s (Calc, CHem, Bio, USH, EURO, LIT, ENG), but 3.75 uw and only honors with a 26 ACT will not make the cut for scholars, gemstone or honors. Our DS was OOS with a 34 ACT and 1390 out of 1600 SAT, but was never offered honors. He marked the X for not wanting to work in groups that removed him from Gemstone. He had not only the big APs, every class was honors or AP, and he did jump start (attended hs 1/2 day and community college 1/2 day).

I am not trying to be the rain cloud, but to me the chances of getting scholars, gemstone or honors with your criteria are slim to none unless it is music related.

Your EC’s and Minnesota IMHO will give you IN, but I can’t see honors.

I beg to differ. You have good grades and good scores and great athletic and leadership. You will do fine.
