Chances at Umich

Just wondering if I'm going to get in...it's my first choice by a lot. I don't really want to go anywhere else

Grades - 3.764 weighted GPA, top 25% of class
Not sure what my Umich GPA is...around the same I think...
SAT - 1500/1600 and retaking it in Nov. so I can do the essay.
ACT - 34 w/o writing, but I took it again and think I got higher, unless I don't do well with the essay
Took 3 APs last year, English - 5 US History - 4 Chemistry - 3, taking 4 AP classes this year (BC calc, AP Gov, AP comparative, AP english, doing some self-studying in AP econ)
Community service - practically nothing....I volunteer 4 hrs/week at an animal hospital but just started that this year
ECs - Academic Decathlon 11-12, Mu Alpha Theta 12, Government club 11-12, JV tennis team 10, might be varsity tennis team this year.
Honors/Awards - Silver medal in econ and silver medal for over-all scholastic at 2005 Academic Decathlon nationals competition (majoring in econ), 2nd place in state literary rally (Louisiana) in 9th grade in World Geography, National Merit semi-finalist and should make finalist, AP something-or-other (the lowest AP award)

I think that's all...I'm out-of-state in Mississippi.

you're in
apply early though.. it's rolling

BTW, I'm not apply until late Nov. or early Dec. so that I can get my ACT/SAT scores with the writing section.

Posted that before I saw your reply, but I guess that just made my post even more relevant. :p

Your GPA is low, and if you apply in December your chances will diminish greatly. You are also OOS. Despite a stellar test score, by then, Michigan will have made decisions for about 70% of their applicants and there will be limited spots. And GPA is the #1 consideration there, and a 3.7 weighted isn't strong, especially for OOS. 98% of their admitted applicants are in the top 20%, and you aren't in that grouping.

Even with stellar test scores, if you have that GPA, and you are applying that late, it will be a REACH for you. You are also OOS, which is a factor against you, have a low class rank for their standards, and don't have much going for you in the EC department.

Well I visited there this summer and was told they wanted to see their applicants taking the new ACT/SAT and I haven't yet which is why I would have the late application...as for my GPA Umich using their own GPA formula using only unweighted 10th/11th grade grades, in which case I have close to a 3.75 which is muhc better on that scale. The main reason for my low GPA was my ninth grade year in which I don't think I had a single A and had a couple C's...since then I haven't had a single C and mostly A's so that seems better. If I do make the varsity tennis team, will that improve my chances?

varisty tennis maybe slightly.. but so many people do varsity sports that it doesnt make you stand out
i would just send the app in early even if scores dont come until later
also, nail those essays

which school in umich are you applying to?

if your u-m gpa is really 3.75 then you'll probably get in

How is Umich GPA calculated? Is it just 10+11 grade grades unweighted? All classes count?

If that's the case then my GPA would be ~3.73

So will it look better if I send the app. in like in two weeks, but the latest tests don't come in until later?

Not all classes, only academic/core classes like Math, English, History, Computer Science, and Sciences.

send your app in ASAP. if they think your new test scores will make a difference they'll wait until they receive them to make a decision. also, A+/A/A- = 4, B+/B/B- = 3 and so on.

Would all these classes count?

Pre-Cal.Trig
AP Chem
Computer applications (learning about word, excel and stuff)
Discrete Math
AP US
AP Eng III
Eng II Acc.
Keyboarding
Chem
World History
Alg II
Latin I
Adv. World Geography

Im not sure about computer applications, or keyboarding, thats not computer science.

Well counting latin and Discrete and Adv. World Geography, and the core classes I'm at a 3.65

with a 3.7/1500 you're in great shape
