Chances at Umich

I'm going into my Senior year of high school, and I'm extremely nervous about applying to Umich seeing as how the application is coming out next month.
White girl from Northern Michigan
ACT 27
GPA 3.75
Ranked 4 out of 60 (Extremely small school)
Our school currently offers no AP classes
My brother got accepted to LSA in the fall of 2012 with a GPA around a high 3.4-3.5 and an ACT score of 28. He had taken the one AP class our school offered at the time.

I'm a student athlete (3 sports a year), in NHS, student council, and other volunteer organizations if that helps any.
I've also been told that I should apply with science as a possible major because society is pushing for women in science (Though I am undecided)

What are my chances? Any advice? What did you get accepted with?

Thanks!

get your act up to a 30 and you should be fine considering ur in-state and an athlete.
some people might say that the gpa is on the lower side but dont worry about that, if anything is going to keep you out its the act

Getting into Michigan is hard, and it’s become even harder over the last couple of years. If you really want to compare yourself to the most recent set of applicants, you might want to check out this[/url”>http://www.admissions.umich.edu/drupal/about-our-applicants]this.

The best way to boost your chances at this point is to apply early (before Nov 1), keep your grades up as high as possible in case they defer you, and try to retake the ACT (you have to take the September ACT for it to get to them on time).

P.S The application is actually already out as of August 1. You might want to start looking at it very soon.

Do Umich has a repo of considering ECs too much ? Or is it more like virginia tech, considering SAT , ACT & high school transcripts the most and dont need much good ECs ?
I am an international student , do rply guys …

Thank you,
I do plan on taking the ACT again but I am worried because I will have been out of school for 3 months. I do have a study program but I feel that not having been in the school setting will throw me off. But I will look at the application now and brainstorm for the essays.

What’s mainly giving me hope is that my brother got accepted with his score and GPA.

I’ve pretty much known I’ve wanted to go to this school since I was born haha

I am also planning to DE this year to get pre-recs taken care of

If you arer applying to LSA, bring up your ACT to at least 29. For Engineering at least 31. That is for in state. Otherwise, you are at the admission mid-50 for MSU.

@BHhazy It’s typically considered rude to hijack someone else’s thread to ask an unrelated question. In the future, if you have a question about Michigan’s admissions philosophy you should make a new thread.

To address your question though, Michigan neither overvalues or undervalues your extracurriculars. They expect most applicants to be involved in stuff outside of school, but it isn’t critical for you to be the president or VP of these organizations (although it does help a bit if you were). While extracurricular involvement is definitely important, your GPA, course rigor, and ACT/SAT scores are still going to be the biggest factors when it comes to admission at Michigan.
