Chances at UMich?

I'm currently a Junior from New York, and I'd like to know my chances at a school like UMich (Ann Arbor)

I am very right-brained and humanities oriented and I definitely struggle with math and science. However, I only got a 3 on both the AP Euro exam (which I self studied) and AP World. I'm not great with tests and I had a pretty rough year especially because of hurricane Sandy. This year I am taking AP English, Human Geography, and US History. They're already my favorite classes and I can confidently say that I think I can achieve a 4 or 5 on all of them.

I have been secretary of my grade for the past two years, I am a member of a nationally ranked Model United Nations team, I am a staff editor for my school newspaper, and I also do community service. Senior year I will be in honor society (that's the only time you can be inducted at my school).

I'm particularly interested in English, Education, US History, maybe business, journalism, and music management. Obviously I will have to narrow my options when it comes to it, but for right now I have to find what I'm most passionate about :)

Unfortunately as I aforementioned, I'm not a great test taker and probably won't do incredible on my SATs. I scored a 1550 on my PSAT sophomore year, and I recently took a diagnostic for a class and scored a 1670. I think I have the potential to score within the 1800-1900 range, which is obviously very good, but not to the standards of some schools. I will most likely take the U.S history and English subject tests by the end of this year.

So, what are my chances as of now? I know there are other factors, but I'm asking based on the information given. I'd also like to know if there would be any chance at financial aid here. My father is middle class and it's very difficult for us to ever get need based financial aid, even though my father can't possibly afford to even pay $30,000 a year.

If you have any other school recommendations, please let me know!! Thank you

—Financial aid isn’t a problem at most publics (or privates, for that matter)…That being said, Michigan is a VERY tough school to get into–even for in-state students (currently ranked #4 by USNews for publics)…Obviously, with such a competitive school, you want to get the highest test scores you can…Otherwise—STRESS the “incidentals” that often mean a LOT to Admissions: The UN team, staff editor—and ANY community work you have done helps (and it’s not too late to “join” service programs in your town–but you need to really JOIN—most Admissions teams are expert at sniffing out “fake” community involvement items on applications)… Good luck!

I disagree with above that financial aid is indeed really a problem for UMich oos students. At the same time, it is also a very competitive school that your current predicted SAT score is far off the mid 50 range for acceptance. Try to bring your GPA above 3.8 and your SAT 2050+, then you will be in the range for competition.

-I received my undergrad degree from Michigan, Master’s from Cornell, and am attending London this fall for doctorate. That being said (although things certainly could have changed in the last 7 years), I didn’t find financial aid to be an issue. As long as you can prove need and family income (via 1040s), it shouldn’t be too rough—don’t forget scholarships, too—there are TONS out there! Good luck!

Take a note on the oos tuition increase in the last 7 years. Also, the scholarship for oos students is quite limited these days. Even for in state, the Michigan merit scholarship is no longer available since a couple years ago. Need base aids would also be mostly on loan. The current oos cost for attending UMich is ~$60k per year. I have been living in Michigan near campus for 14 years and witness all the changes.

FYI, the oos tuition of UMich increased from $27601 in 2006 to $40392 (freshmen) this year, a near 50% increase in 7 years.
