Chances at Umich

I never really considered this school because I thought my grades were too low, but then I noticed that they don't count freshman year. I'm still probably a reach, but maybe you guys could give me some insight.

I'm a junior at a pretty top notch public school in Illinois:

GPA (without freshman year) 3.86 w; w/ freshman year- 3.7
I also have upward trend over the last three semesters- 3.5, 3.85, 4.15
ACT: 29
rank: 229/767

EC's:

Marching Band-Tuba; We meet after school everyday
from 3:30 to 5:00.

Jazz- Trumpet

concert band- Tuba; I'm in the school's top group if that
helps at all.

Church group. It's kind of the think tank for the youth
ministry program.

Apologetics (church group)

Retreat Leader

Summer baseball

Awards+leadership:
Invited to Boys State, a selective American Legion
summer program where you learn about state
government.

Attended two Youth Leadership Conferences at Lewis
University.

Distinguished honor roll this past semester; high honor
roll all others.

Invitied by my band directors to audition for All-District
music.

Senior classes:
Urban History- History of Chicago (weighted)
AP Statistics
Wind Ensemble
Humanities (weighted)
Essay Writing (weighted)
Research and Design
AP Spanish V
PE

I'm in AP english this year and have taken a few honors classes fresh. and soph, year.

I'd like to study marketing/ concentration on advertising if possible.

Thanks for all your help.

i'd say decent chances, although i'm from the east coast and not very familiar with the ACT and what is actually a good score...
class rank is a bit low, but they will see that upward trend which is very good. Pretty good EC's...Make sure you do well senior year, APPLY EARLY, and i think you'll get in.

man, ur in ... dnt. wry.

hmm...sry...im gonna have to disagree w/ the above poster...since youre using weighted grades im going to assume your unweighted is a bit lower than 3.86...im going to assume that it is about 3.6...if you have a 3.6 unweighted gpa...you are probably a slight reach for uofm because being out of state the competition is more difficult.

Well, put it this way...out of state is a LOT more competitive. Did you go to / are you going to Boys State? It supposedly ensures that you'll get into college. I have a friend with similar stats as you, except with a 1520 (34 ACT) SAT and more APs. I would say go to Boys State and study/retake the ACT/SAT...unless you feel like you're hitting a brick wall on those tests (they're painful...).

what about out of country (non-citizen) livin in USA? how hard is that compared to a US citizen not livin in michigan and/or a US citizen in michigan ...?????!!!!! im dead...

I'm not sure. It's probably all propaganda, but when I visited, they had a lot about making Michigan a more global community.

My unweighted gpa since sophomore year is 3.7. This all great advice, thanks so much.

It is really hard to say. A couple of years ago, I would have said you are a match. But this year, Michigan turned down many qualified applicants as its acceptance rate dropped from over 55% to under 50%. If one were to go by the trend of the last 3 years, Michigan can expect an acceptance rate of 40% next year. If that's the case, I'd say Michigan is a reach for you.
