Chances at UMich

African-American male
3.72 GPA weighted
26 ACT Composite
Rank: 7/85
No AP courses(none are offered at my school)
One year of Honor classes(honor classes in name only, none this year)
Quite a bit of community service including:

An artist's representation of how a portion of Detroit(the city where I reside) could look if the city gave an organization that specializes in "beautifying Detroit" was given a large grant.

Teaching an art class.

Also, one of my pictures is being used as the cover of a soon-to-be published book. I guess I'm about to be an illustrator as well. I'm going to start tutoring middle school children this year as well.

My GPA probably won't go much higher than a 3.7, but my ACT score will most likely be a bit higher. That 26 was my first attempt at the test-that was the record high for my school. I don't know if being raised in Michigan, living in a low-income single family home, and dealing with the pathetic Detroit school system accounts for anything but I sure hope it does. Does it?

So, could you guys tell me my chances with and without a higher ACT score(probably high 20's low 30's)? Also, I have recommendations from two teachers that are UMICH-AA alumni if that counts for anything.

EDIT: ....

Affirmative action will no longer help, unfortunately for you...

Is that Michigan GPA?

In-state helps a lot, of course.

Interesting community involvement and art talents.

Right now, I'd say slight reach.

Yeah, that's Michigan GPA.

Meh, Affirmative Action-I've never gained anything from it, nor have I expected to. No loss there. I wouldn't doubt UMICH on trying to squeeze in as many minorities as possible anyway though-they still see diversity as a strength.

Again, my ACT score will probably be a bit higher(tommorow is judgement day).

I still have MSU...

Did I mention all that National Honor Roll, Who's Who Among Whatever, and what not? I get a lot of those(none of which I can afford, ouch). Are those worth anything without having your name in the books?

You can aim higher than that. I'd say you're in at Michigan State

You're right, I've already been accepted. =P

Thanks by the way

..................Bump.................

You'll probably get in, but I can't say for sure.

Okay, now if I had around a 29 or 30ish ACT would I be a shoe-in?

Umichigan has affirmative action. on a news report it found that they value u if your a "under represent minority" aka(black, hispanic, native american, etc). in fact it found they value u if u are under represented as much as full SAts. For the general admissions, depending on ur program, you are probably in. u should get ur standerized tests up

I heard the same thing. Good stuff.

I'm assuming your UM GPA is probably aruond a 3.7 too. I'd say that UMich is a match for you considering your ethnicity; If your ACT goes to a high 20/low 30 I'd say it's even higher. MCRI doesn't go into effect until December and from what I have heard UMich is asking to finish this year based on the same standards before MCRI was passed.

Haven't you guys heard ANYTHING about the resolution passed in Michigan banning race-based affirmative action?

We've heard we just know that UMICH still wants "diversity" and that they also wish to continue their current way about going things until the end of the year. Either way, I have a 28 ACT now, so I think I belong there-black or otherwise.

You definitely should be in there black or otherwise...and I'm not screaming at you "AFFIRMATIVE ACTIONS SUCKS! DIE URMs!" I'm just saying, don't count on it to be as strong as it used to be...that's all

Yeah...it definitely won't be what it used to be.

I wish Affirmative Action was based on economic status, I'd be set.

Are my chances significantly higher now that I have a 28 ACT? My ECs are sort of short but that's more or less because there are very few offered in my school and community(no one wants to get robbed trying to do community service so very few from Detroit try).

I joined Robotics this year, does that count?

Not unless you have a leadership position it won't be helping much/at all

Mmm, good point.
