What are my chances at LSA? I'll be applying late August/early September.

I'm an in-state, white male
I attend a private prep school which received 6 pts on UMich's old system
GPA: 3.8 UW // 5 APs by graduation
ACT: I haven't received my score, but I'm expecting around a 29
Decent ECs...

My class rank, however, is most likely only top 25-30% because of my really low Freshman GPA.

Do I have a good shot at getting into LSA? Is there anything I could do to improve my chances? Thanks.

dwade, hyou do realize Michigan does not look at Fresman grades right? If you made a huge adjustment in your GPA and academic performance starting your sophomore year, you will be fine. Your GPA and course toughness are good. If you can get a 29 on your ACT, you will be in decent shape. Obviously, if you get a 30+, you would be in better shape. As always, apply as early as possible.

Thanks for the feedback. I know UMich doesn't use Freshman grades for recalculating GPA but they are used for class rank, aren't they? Also, I ended up with a 28, 31/30/21(!?!?!?)/29 on my ACT. I know I can score much higher in reading so I'm going to retake in Oct. Will UMich delay reading my app until they receive my new ACT score, taking away the whole apply early advantage? Thanks.

My s was deferred, deferred, rejected from U-M. I don't mean to discourage anyone - just reality. In-state. Top prep school 3.8 GPA 31+ ACT, 2 Varsity sports, tons ec's, traveled to over 30 countries doing comm. serv in Malawi and Mongolia, Mother and grand parents alums, great recs and good essays. Just venting- can't get over the shock. Is headed to William and Mary in the fall. Good luck to all upcoming seniors. Who knows what U-M wants.

Tennismom, people assume that simply because Michigan has a 50% acceptance rate (sometimes even higher) and because the mean SAT is 1320 and mean ACT is 29, that getting in is a given for in-staters with excellent credentials...like your son. But it is not so. I would almost never tell a person that Michigan is a safety, unless he/she is a 4.0 student with 1500+ on the SAT and 34+ ont eh ACT...and even then, it is a risky safety.

At any rate, College of W&M is awesome. Congratulations on the excellent acceptance.

Tennismom, I can appeciate the vent!!! Daughter with pretty similar stats/ECs as your S applied in Oct., deferred in February and wait-listed mid-April. OOS however, Virginia actually, and will be attending another top Big 10. Makes you wonder what hoops the state schools put up for their own in-staters!! Best to your son at W&M.

tennismom, what's the top prep school? DCD, Cranbrook, or something else? Because we have lots of similar students to your son here at Troy, and I've never heard of them not getting in to UM.

tennismom - How early did your son apply in the first place? I'm just curious. I applied in mid-October and got accepted in mid-December. However, based on what you said about your son's stats, I'm shocked that they didn't take him. This makes me wonder why the heck they accepted me and not him. I know this sounds like I'm kind of putting myself down right now, but it sounds like Michigan would have gotten a better deal if they would have taken your son and not me.

I was just at orientation earlier this week and met some amazing people at Michigan (some of which I may be friends with over the next few years). One thing they all had in common was that they were all smart, but they also were very unique individuals. It make me wonder what they look for in the first place.

I'm sure you are very qualified also. He sent in his application mid-Sept,was deferred by late Oct. deferred again later and then waitlisted in April. Recieved final rejection one week ago. Best of luck and GO BLUE.

Haha, the good ol' Cranbrook of 8 mile fame....gotta love when your own school gets a big diss in such a major film.

Refresh my memory--how was it dissed?

I can recall that attending Cranbrook seriously diminished the street cred of the guy who went there, but that's not really a slam on the school. It was a reflection of the perverse value system that says it's bad to have aspirations, seek education, read books, be well-educated. Was there another way? It's been awhile since I've seen the film.

"But I know something about you,
You went to Cranbrook, thats a private school,
Whats the matter dawg you embarrased?
This guys a gangster?
His real name's Clearance.

And Clearance lives at home with both parents,
And Clearance's parents have a real good marriage,
this guy dont wanna battle, hes shook,
cuz ain't no such things as halfway crooks,
He's scared to death,
He's scared to look in his *in yearbook, * Cranbrook."

You're right, the school doesn't really get slammed.
