I'm interested in UNC Chapel Hill, but I've recently heard that it's considered one of the "ivy league" public schools. That freaked me out a bit, so I thought I'd ask here.

Here's some info:
-I'm a white female
-currently a junior in high school in Texas
-ACT : 34 (waiting on SAT score)
-weighted GPA : 4.45 (my school is weird and doesn't report unweighted)
-unfortunately not top 10% at my school :(
-9 APs by the end of Senior year
-5 years of French
-4 years in marching band & concert band, 2 years in jazz band
-placed in Area band on clarinet 3 years (hopefully 4 & possibly State)
-100+ hours of volunteering with a pet rescue organization (I help market the rescued animals to potential adopters)
- incredibly & totally undecided on any sort of major :(

Thank you!
I know I don't have too much to work with (and this would definitely be a reach), but just how much of a reach is it? Is it worth it to apply? Don't worry about crushing my dreams, I'm a junior and I have plenty of time to decide where to apply. :)

Let me know, thanks!

Note: I'm also tentatively looking at Puget Sound, Tulane, Trinity, Redlands, Gonzaga, & St. Olaf. Feel free to let me know of any other suggestions if you think somewhere else would be a good fit (I like good academics + medium/small student body + friendly people + nice campuses + fun cities)

You definitely have a chance, but out-of-state admissions at UNC-CH are brutal. I think you also have a shot at Vanderbilty, and your chances at Tulane are excellent. Are you looking for generous scholarship offers? If not, then Reed sounds good for you. Since you’re interested in West Coast schools, try Whitman, Occidental, Pitzer, and Willamette, also (Pitzer is poor prospect for financial aid, though, I learned from experience). You might not like it, but New College of Florida is brainy, quirky, and affordable - it’s right for some students, not for others. William & Mary might be a good fit, also.

Thanks @woogzmama, I will definitely check some of those out. I will need some merit aid at certain schools, it really depends on the cost of the particular school. I don’t think there are too many schools where I would need to depend on getting large amounts of money.

Also, quick edit to my stats: French Honor Society, National Honor Society, Band Section Leader (1 year). GPA provided is on a 4.80 scale. Forgot those, sorry about that :)

I think you have a pretty good chance at Puget Sound and Gonzaga! I’m from Washington and am considering applying to both of those colleges too. One of my friends last year applied to UNC Chapel Hill with about the same stats as you as she didn’t get in… I mean you never know but I’ve heard they really only accept OOC athletic students. I would also totally recommend that you look at Whitman (like the previous post). It’s located in a small town in southeast Washington but the campus is absolutely beautiful and the people are so nice. Hope I helped you out!

Do take a close look at Whitman since you are already considering schools in the NW. It has great academics, a relaxed friendly atmosphere, a wonderful campus and Walla Walla is a charming town. With your stats, receiving merit aid is a definite possibility.

Thanks guys! I will definitely check out Whitman, I just looked it up a little and it seems like it could work for me :). It might be a little small, but you never know until you see it, right? I’m planning on taking a college trip at some point to visit schools in that area, so I will most likely check it out.
