Hey yall, I currently go to a small selective liberal arts college that is extremely isolated, and I'm thinking about transferring next year to UNC. I think I heard that UNC doesn't look at state residency for transfers, is this true?
HS Record:
Unweighted GPA: 3.6
Weighted GPA: 4.3-4.4
Top 10% in class

SAT: 1940..690 W/640 CR/610 M *Should I retake. I think I could definitely up my math and reading scores.

SAT II's- 660 Bio E 660 US History

I've taken the hardest schedule possible with 8 AP's.

Extracurricular's:
Captain of Swimming
VP of School.
President of Snowboard club.
*I have enough, but don't want to list all of them.

College:
Freshman at a small selective liberal arts college.
GPA: I have no idea, hopefully a 4.0. I'm really working hard.
On the crew team, environmental group, and participating in Relay for Life.

That was a little harsh UNCguy33, but I do think, because you’re OOS, your chances are kind of slim. Since you’re a freshman, you won’t have that much college work under your belt, so your high school record will be a pretty big factor.

Unfortunately, I believe they absolutely look at state residency for transfers. My son attempted to get in this past spring and no luck. He had very good grades, as evidenced by his transfer acceptances at BC, Villanova, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Wake Forest. Sorry, but I believe UNC-CH is extremely difficult to transfer into out-of-state.

I guess that I’ll apply knowing that I may not get accepted. What are some good alternatives? I’m thinking about applying to UVA (I know its a reach), Vanderbilt, JMU, maybe W&M, and Notre Dame. Could you guys chance me for those?

Hey Surf, I’ve been trying to get into UNC for 2 years now… Denied as a First Year applicant, then wait-listed and later denied as a sophomore transfer applicant. Along the way I’ve learn quite a lot. Here is some of what I’ve gleamed from the admissions department and other applicants…

Residency does NOT matter for transfer students.

Sophomore transfer application is very competetive and Carolina accepts very few

Junior transfer application is where the bulk of the transfer students accepted into Carolina come from…

HS grades, rank, strength of curriculum, ECs and SATs/ACTs are seriously considered for Sophomore application as well as your college GPA, ECs, and at UNC, that very important essay which should give them an insight into who you are… You’ll need an average first semester college GPA of 3.75 in rigorous classes unless you really had stellar HS stats.

For Junior transfer applicants, HS grades, rank, rigor of curriculum and ECs are considered along with your college GPA, ECs and essay. Your SATs/ACTs are not required. More weight is given to your college accomplishments than your HS ones…
Again, that essay is extremely important… You need to show them that you are selfless, well-rounded, leader who is smart and motivated with a good heart. Remember, Carolina takes a holistic approach in their admissions, so no number will automatically disqualify you…
