Hi, I'm an anxious junior hoping to become a journalism major. I would really love to go to UNC because of its journalism program, but I know it is difficult to get in out of state. Please enlighten me as to my chances of getting in.

Your odds are slim. The acceptance rate for applicants at UNC is 36%, a very low acceptance rate for a national university. 82% of the accepted applicants have to be in-state students, they set up quotas to keep this number. You generally need to be in the top 25% of all percentiles to have a chance there, which you just barely are. While your stats are in that area, you need to realize that 1 in 3 gets in who have similar stats to you. It will come down to your essay, rec letter, most likely.

What is your unweighted academic GPA? The 4.2 will be completely unweighed on the UNC scale.

I agree with the above poster that 30% chance is reasonable. It's a reach for anyone with solid stats. They don't want OOS applicants. They received about 10,000 OOS apps last year, and only accepted about 2,000.

"on that note, would anyone like to recommend stellar journalism/communication programs in the southeast?"

Not in the southeast, but Syracuse University has one of the best journalism/communication schools around. My sister currently attends SU and is in the communications school, and she can't say enough about it. Lots of SU grads writing for New York Times, Washington Post, Conde Nast Magazine, etc. I believe Conde Nast and other magazines even have internships set up specifically for SU students.

It isn't in the southeast, but you definately should check it out.

In reality the admissions rate for out of state applicants at UNC is lower than 18%. Some of that percentage is taken up with athletes and children of out of state alums who are given special consideration.

It's easier to get into UVA out of state since they take in over 30% non-residents.
