Chances at Undergrad Business Schools

Hey CC community I was wondering if ya'll could reach/match/safety me for some schools. I am also looking for a couple other schools to visit and apply to so any suggestions are welcome.

So, here come the stats.

White male
Upstate New York
Class of 2008
My high school sends very few kids to top schools
Sat's: Math 690 Writing 650 Critical Reading 600 for a 1940
Class rank is top 10 of 330
My GPA is about a 96.5 (my school doesn't weight)

I've taken the hardest coarse load offered at my school. By senior year I will have taken 5 of the 6 AP classes offered at my school. I have also won a free class at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute for senior year.

I have been class president every year since 8th grade and have been elected to continue for senior year. I've been chosen to attend various nationwide leadership programs such as Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY), Boy's State, Student's in Government, and Suburban Council Leadership Conference. I have been active in our schools Students Against Destructive Decisions club.

Athletics wise, I have run varsity cross country and outdoor track since freshmen year. I played junior varsity basketball in 9th and 10th grade and indoor track during 11th and will do that senior year as well. I have won numerous team awards for running which aren't worth writing out. For anyone familiar with track, I run 2:03 in the 800 and 4:34 in the 1600 so hopefully I'll have some success talking to coaches.

I'm looking to major in business with a concentration in finance. I love following the stock market and the world economy. The class I won from RPI will be an introductory economics class. I currently put all my savings into a stock portfolio that I've worked to build up since I was 13 (up about 35% since I started).

Schools I think I will apply to (in order of interest):
1. University of Virginia
2. University of Pennsylvania
3. University of North Carolina
4. Boston College
5/6. Georgetown/Syracuse

Thanks in advance and if you have any schools to suggest/sell to me I would really appreciate it.

I have heard that Wharton will only go as low as low 700s for athletes, and then just a couple.

Your rank is strong for an athlete anywhere, that will help.

University of Virginia: Match
University of Pennsylvania: Reach
University of North Carolina: (i'm guessing you mean chapel hill) Match to Slight Reach
Boston College: Match to slight Reach
Georgetown: Reach
Syracuse: Safety

Your athletic status will definitely help at the more selective schools. If you can, try to possibly retake your SAT's to increase your critical reading score especially. I also would suggest you to take the ACT's once just to see if you prefer that test. You definitely show enthusiasm about business and have taken part in several leadership activities, which would also be beneficial to your college profile. Good luck, hope this helps!

University of Virginia: Match

University of Pennsylvania: High Reach

University of North Carolina: Reach (OOS)

Boston College High match/low reach

Georgetown: Reach

Syracuse: Safety

i have to say, those are some nice 800 and 1600 times. but r u in the fastest in your school? oh, and, this is off topic, but have u done the CNBC million dollar portfolio challenge? if so, how well did u do? i was lucky one week and got over 40% in 3 days.

also, what career do u want? stockbroker? financial analyst? i am into the stock market as well, but more of a strategist for portfolios and investments.

Thanks! That is really encouraging to hear that Virginia would be a match for me because as of right now it is by far my number one.

Can anyone suggest a couple match or slight reach schools for me with excellent business schools?

Iildimsum7- Yea I was the fastest runner on my team. I didn't do the CNBC challenge but I saw a lot about it. But 40% in three days in incredible. I want to work for a hedge fund or work in private equity. What schools are you looking at/ where do you go?

One of my teammates here in VA ran almost identical times (2:03/4:33) and was told by the coach that he wasn't even interested in the kid as a walk-on. It can never hurt to contact the coach, though... especially if you think you can pull some good PRs senior year.

Go to Michigan over UVA and all schhols on your list other than Wharton for access to HF jobs.

Have you thought about Stern at NYU?

Hm that's odd.. I contacted the coach earlier and he said that if I continue to drop times I would be able to walk on. Did your friend run those times as a senior? If so, then yea the coach would have no interest.

Thanks for the tips on the other schools. I will have to check out Michigan and NYU.
