Volunteer Work:

I have spent my past four years volunteering at the hospital. I have worked in staff management offices where I needed to organize files and data. I have also worked in the medical aid office where I helped mail and edit letters.

Over the summer I spent time volunteering for the Democratic Headquarters of my town. When I was working for them I was provided with the opportunity to campaign for someone who is running for State Senate. I spent a lot of time in the city trying to gain support for his issues by discussing them when I went to knock on doors.

Job Work:

Spent the summer working for Andy Dillon who was running for governor. While working for him I went door to door trying to earn support. I spent time at polls before elections to help campaign for him some more.

I spent time doing work for a local restaurant. I usually spent my time doing tasks such as cleaning and yard work.

Sports:

For the past four years I have been playing tennis for my school. I played Junior Varsity for my first three years and I was Junior Varsity captain for my junior year. During my senior year I played Varsity. I also played competitive tennis outside of school in local USTA tournaments and other types of tournaments.

Research Work:

During the summer I spent time working at the Field Neuroscience Institute. While I was there I worked as a research assistant with other high school and college students. We split into groups and spent time trying to convert mesenchymal stem cells into neuronal stem cells in rats. The results came out well and showed that we were able to produce neuronal stem cells with the use of Human Growth Hormone and the processes of Flow Cytometry. The group is currently working on a paper to publish our research.

Extra Curricular Activities:

For the past four years of high school I have been participating in Quiz bowl. Each year our team successfully won regionals and made it to states.

I took a great interest in debate in school. My first year in debate I was a novice debater. My next year I was able to debate in open debate against more competitive people. This year I will be a debate captain in open debate.

I have been putting a lot of time into a charity organization. I spent a lot of time out of school helping with different types of fundraisers for this club. We collected money for organizations such as Unicef. We earned money to donate to the people in Haiti. We also hosted a fundraiser for the children at St. Jude’s hospital.

I am also participating in Multi Cultural Club. In this club I have taken an interest in being in the food committee. As a worker in the food committee I am in charge of trying to get local restaurant’s to donate food with the promise of offering those restaurants a sponsorship or advertisement.

I will write a decent essay for my application and hope to apply by the end of October. I will get two good teacher recommendations and a good counselor recommendation.

I have two good letters from Boston University professors when I participated in the Summer Challenge program at Boson University.

I am hesitant of applying due to a low chance of getting in. Is it worth applying here? DO I have a decent shot of getting in? (20%+?)

I’m assuming you are from Michigan since you were working for Dillon. This will definitely be a plus because Pitt likes OOS students and I don’t believe they have a lot from there. The rigor of your curriculum seems to be good, as do your extracurriculars. Obviously, it is the test scores and GPA that are a little worrisome. Your math score falls in the middle 50%, but your critical reading score falls in the bottom 25% of those admitted. Your GPA is also low, and your class rank is in Pitt’s bottom 14%.

I have to be honest, it looks tough right now. However, they do look at every single application, they don’t just have automatic cut-offs pre-screened by test scores. Your CR SAT score isn’t too far away, and you can also look at it as there were a whole quarter of their students who got in with similar scores this past year, so that is definitely >20%. It is the GPA I’d be most worried about to tell you the truth, but if there is any way to increase that SAT to make it more competitive, it would be good to do so (Pitt superscores so you could concentrate on improving the CR). Barring that, apply as early as possible, because with Pitt practicing rolling admissions, it gets harder to get in the later you apply as spots fill up.

There’s no guarantee either way. I certainly believe it is worth a shot to apply. The worst case scenario is that you’d get placed in one of Pitt’s three regional campuses, and the advantages and disadvantages of that can be talked about later, but you can move to the Pittsburgh campus from those, they are all ranked by US News and Princeton Review in their particular categories, and diplomas are all the same at Pitt wherever you get it from. But that talk can be saved for later.

your GPA is kinda low…and you only got a 3.0 junior year, which is an important year, so that might hurt. but you’ve taken a lot of AP’s so that should help. and you’re indian so that should help too. i have sort of similar grades. fewer AP’s, but a higher GPA. my HS is also well known for our academics. my college counselor said its realistic for me to get in, but not definite, so i’m guessing thats about the same for you. DO APPLY. and apply as soon as possible. you’ll never know unless you apply. and your ec’s are good too. good luck!
