I'm a freshman at VT and want to transfer to UVA for the Fall 2005 semester.

Stats:

College GPA: 4.0 UW
Highschool GPA: 3.61
SAT score: 1310
Essay: Excellent according to a few sources
Residency: VA in-state
Reccomendations: Letter from an Alum to the President of the University

College classes: 2 Semests of general chem, U.S. Gov/Politics, Greek/Roman Myth, Honors Freshman English, Elementary Calc, Nations and Nationalities (non-Western culture comparison and anthropology), General Physics, Morality and Justice (Philosophy), Sociology

Sorry, not a current student. I'm trying to transfer myself, but from the looks of it, I think you have a pretty good chance. One, because you're in-state, and two because your stats look good, better than mine that's for sure. I'm at UMD and applied to Tech and UVa, but UVa is definitely a reach for me. I thought I'd give a try anyway. One never knows until they try.

nahrafsfa, I think you have an awesome chance, I transfered from Tech last year with a 4.0 at Tech, around 3.5 in hs and 1350. The recommendation letter won't make any difference, your GPA and essays are what will get you in. Are you in the honors program at Tech?

wahoo2007, do you know if they really look at SAT's if you're a transfer? Mine was so low (1200). :( I'm at 3.65 now and made the Dean's List at UMD, but I've never taken Calculus, only Algebra/Trig. Do you think that will hurt me? I'm trying to transfer into Arts & Sciences and I will have 9 credits in Poli-Sci by the end of the semester. I want to major in poli-sci and go on to law school.

wahoo, I'm not in the honors program, but I took basically the only honors class that coulda fit in to my schedule for the last 2 semesters. I took the honors Freshman english last semest and pulled off a pretty high A....with a professor who gives out an average of one A per class, because he's a grading Nazi. Other than that, the classes I am taking, I"ve pulled some damn high scores and I'm sending Dean Roberts some rough averages for each of my classes at the end of march (although unofficial and tentative), because he siad it could save me from a dreaded wait list.

and then.....if the GPA, SATs and essay don't get me in....i'm basically falling back on the recommendation, because my recommender was friends with the President back in college.

wahoo, if the recs don't make any difference, why do they say they're optional for transfers? I went ahead and had an advisor and a prof send a rec with the online app.

I'm sure recs can't hurt you (if their good), but they're probably not going to make the difference in you getting admitted. UVa can't care about them too much if they say that they are optional. When I applied after hs, I had 2 good recs from teachers, a rec from Larry Sabato and from the University VP and was waitlisted. They clearly didn't help me, when I transfered I didn't include any and I got in.

Obviously I'm no expert on the subject, but my anecdotal experience seems to indicated their unimportance.

Katt,
I've been told that SATs are of low importance for students applying as freshman and even lower importance for people transfering. As far as not having calculus, I had it when I applied because I'm an econ/american politics double major and I needed it for econ; but I can't see any reason why it would hurt you. I think in your situation it would be better to have a good grade in Alg/Trig than a mediocre grade in calc.
Good luck!!

yeah SATs play a role if you have a marginal GPA. If you have a semi-decent gpa, say a 3.7-3.8 your SATs will be taken in to a higher account than if you had a 4.0

Well, I would hope my 3.65 gpa is more than semi-decent, especially since the mean gpa for transfers last year was in the 3.4 to 3.6 range. Of course it usually goes up every year, but I should still be ok in that department.

if you're transferring after your second year then they wont' even look at your SATs....if you're transferring after your first year, on the other hand....that's where it makes a difference

and about your calculus problem....if you're a first year right now it won't matter...BUT...if you;'re a second year...alg/trig doesn't count towards fulfilling your transfer requirements, UVa wants a regular calc class for that

nahrafsfa, that's not exactly true, UVa has a math/science requirement. You can take only one or both; in fact you can graduate from many majors in A&S without taking any math classes so long as you have 12 hours of science classes to fulfill the requirement.
