Hi everyone! (I hope I am in the right discussion!)

I really want to get into University of the Pacific's 5 year dental program. I discovered this program while browsing through CC, and this program suits my career aspirations (of becoming a dentist).

Here are my stats, thanks in advance for your time!

SAT: 1240 (610 M, 630 V) June 2004
1380 (690 M, 690 V) October 2004

GPA: 3.89
WGPA: 4.42

AP: Biology - 4

This year's courses:
-AP Calculus AB
-AP English Language and Composition
-AP Modern World History
-Honors Physics
-Latin 2
-Ceramics
-Business Internship (My internship is at a dental office where I do clerical work and instrument sterilization. However I am also learning some skills such as fillings and taking impressions (on a set of model teeth). They are writing a recommendation for me as well.

EC's:
-300+ hours volunteering at a local hospital
-Teaching local elementary schools students science labs
-2006 class planner (I am graduating in the class of 2005 but I still have ties to my original class)
and more but lazy to list

LOR's:
-I have my AP Biology teacher, English teacher, and my boss (dentist) writing me recommendations. They all will be excellent, or at least I am confident that they will be.
-My counselor recommended me for the UOP's Founder's scholarship. I have yet to write the essay but I am a hopeful candidate for it!

Extra's:
-My high school is prestigious and the work is rigorous.
-I am Chinese-American female born in the United States.
-I live on the east coast.
-I am graduating high school one year early, and I have heard that colleges don't like that since they will think I am immature. However my teacher recommendations will definitely expel that belief.

Do you think I can make it into UOP's 5 year dental/pre-dental program? The requirements for consideration are 3.7 GPA and 1350 SAT. I have made those requirements but that is just for consideration. Do I have a good chance in getting in?

Hey,
You're stat's are great, I'm almost 100% sure you'll get in. From my understanding (I used to be interested in the program), if you meet the mininmum requirements that they've posted on the website, you'll basically get in. The catch is that their 5 year program is not guaranteed, and apparently only like 3 out of the 20 people actually make it into the program after their first two years. However, I think that if you work really hard, you will be able to make it :)
Hope I helped

Thanks for your input! Yeah my mom was a Electrical Engineering major at the University of Maryland at College Park. You aren't declared in the Electrical Engineering major until your junior year. They just like to weed out all the people so it's intense. She says all the hot majors are cut-throat. But I think I'll be able to take it. Once again, thanks for your input!

Hi, I am writing to this forum because I wanted to know my chances at the UOP accelerated dental program, it is my number 1 choice

SAT2: 700 writing/770math2c/660 US History
GPA: 3.95 Unweighted, 4.17 Weighted
Rank: 22 out of 520 students

Schedule:
AP Calculus BC
College Engineering Physics
College Intensive Introductory Spanish
AP Macro/Micro economics
AP Biology

Work experience:
150+ volunteer hours at local hospital
225 hours of summer internship at Dental Office, assisted
Leadership:
Captain of the High School Cross Country team
Secretary of National Honor Society
Other:
Korean-American, living in Cali
spiritedaway, if you could please elaborate on how the program works? i thought that the 5 year was guaranteed, and how does it work that only 3 out of 20 people actually make it? Thanks.

hey,
You're stats look great, i'd say you're definitely in. As I've mentioned above, I believe they will accept you as long as you meet the minimum averages (1350 SAT, 3.7 GPA I think) UOP's dental program used to be my first choice too, but then I discovered that they don't guarantee you admission to their dental school. So bascially you are still on the same playing field as everyone else, and I heard that since a 2-year pre-dental program is so rigorous, many people don't make it to their dental school after 2 years. When I learned that I decided to jsut do a normal undergrad program., because I didn't like UOP as an undergrad school that much anyways :P
Hope I was helpful :)

with a 3.89 did u end up getting into the 5 year program?
which classes did u get a B in?
i also want to go to 5 year program next year… plz fill me in.

i was just wondering…if the min. gpa is 3.7uw, but should not they say what level classes you are taking (honors vs reg)?
would not it be a lot unfair for people taking all honors and ap’s?
