Hi, I'm interested in applying for UPenn's Wharton school, possibly Early Decision, and I kind of wanted to know my chances. After perusing the forums it seems like my extracurriculars are really under par, at least compared to the rest of the people here. These are my extracurriculars:

Community Service club - 4 years
Museum Volunteer - 3 years
Buddhist Youth Group (it's sort of like a church atmospher but we also do community service)- 2.5 years, group leader 1.5 years
Class officer/representative - 4 years
FBLA - 2 years, officer 1 year
School Newspaper
4 total JV sports, Scholar Athlete; club sport 4 years
Nat'l Merit Commended
Volunteer English teacher assistant at out-of-country preschool
jobs: tutoring for a semester
Piano - 12 years
chinese school - 11 years

My grades are okay, nothing too spectacular. I've gotten 3 B's my whole high school career, all in AP classes. I also dropped an AP science class at the semester, and junior year i took Calc BC and APUS. For senior year, I'm planning on taking Spanish5 AP, APLit, AP Stats, physics, newspaper, chinese. test grades are okay so far (high 700s), and SATI was 2240. (780 math, 770 critical reading, 690 writing <but my="" essay="" was="" 11="" 12="">)</but>

My school, and my grade in particular, is very competitive. I'm guessing my GPA is 4.3 (weighted)...and i'm at least in the top 15%, maybe 10%, i'm not too sure (my class is FULL of smart brainiacs).

as i said, i don't have the greatest extracurriculars. most people have a ton of internship stuff but i don't...would it be too late to try and get one now?

i think you should def apply ED. you have a good SAT and GPA, so maybe making ur ecs more business-oriented. good luck. by the way, do you have any positions on your newspaper? you should mention it.

Did you say you dropped an AP class? If you did the class for a while and that period appears on your transcript you should explain to your colleges why you dropped it.

You won't get in. Wharton is HYPS caliber except they take kids who have a set passion for business or a talent that distinguishes them from from other applicants, neither of which you have. They know many kids apply just for the big bucks at the end.

First of all don't listen to dooit. I GO to Wharton and I can tell you that your stats are in Wharton's range. I suggest you try to show a lot of leadership in your ECs (become president, exec board member, etc. of a few organizations). Wharton looks for bright kids that are natural leaders. So your ECs DON'T have to be business oriented but they do have to show a lot of leadership. Also in your essay really try to show them why you want to go to Penn...if you truly show them that you want to go to Penn and you improve your leadership qualities I think you have a decent shot at Penn ED. Also if you can get in the top 10% you'll improve your chances by a lot. I think if you do all these things you'll have a decent shot at penn ED...I know many kids at wharton with lower stats that have gotten in because they are ambitious leaders...

well i was a class officer, rep, and will be head class rep this year and am a "link crew leader", a youth group leader, and club officer. oh also for newspaper i've been section editor for two years. does that help?

I currently attend wharton as well and I think the essays are an important part of the application. I really feel a student with 2400 on SAT's 800's on SAT II's and a 4.0 GPA can lose if there essay seems fake. On the flip side a student with the less than perfect stats can display great charisma with the two essays. Personally I think my essays significantly helped me. Also, I understand where Bern is coming from with the leadership positions, but also, don't go overboard. You want a few strong leadership positions, not the presidency to every club in your school. ECs are another place for you to show the admissions how solid of a person you are. I think the leadership positions are looking great that you just mentioned. Especially section editor.

thanks futureman. how do u think the chances are if i apply RD? i haven't visited UPenn and to be frank, even if i miraculously get in, it's a locked decision ED and Penn is very very far from where i live and a totally diff lifestyle...

DEFINITELY visit! Philadelphia living is an acquired taste, and you need to decide whether or not it's for you before you lock yourself into a year (minimum) of it. I have 3 friends at Penn- 1 at Wharton, and all of them love it.

well, i'm from the west coast and after visiting I knew I would love going to this place even though it was far from my home. I agree with czechitout and I think you need to come to Penn for a visit. try to balance school tours with your own walking around. the tours can be a bit unrealistic in terms of what they say at times and just walking around campus will give you a chance to find things out a little for yourself. i applied ed and it was one of my best decisions yet. I believe even if you get in ed you can still apply elsewhere just to show penn which schools gave you a better package so that they can analyze how fair their original assessment on your fin. aid package was. Don't quote me on that though. I think you have a good shot for rd too. It depends on your essays though. Make sure those are solid and be sure to give your leadership positions a nice light without going overboard. Those are my two pieces of advice.
