-I am going to be a senior next year and i dont know how good my chances are at these schools for a computer science major. I am from a good public school from connecticut. I will be captain of my swim team next year. I have done gentle computer coaching since 8th grade at a senior center. I have also been on the tennis team since freshman year. I have also been lifeguarding since the beginning of my junior year.

-My unweighted GPA is 3.15
-My weighted GPA is 3.45

-Next year i am taking ap computer science, ap physics, and ap calc ab

-I have taken honors/ap classes in foreign language and history as well

-First sitting sat was 670 math, 590 critical reading, 540 writing, total - 1800 (i know the writing is weak but i am hoping colleges will look at the 1600 scale)

-I am planning on taking the act in september

-Does anyone know if i can still send october sat scores for a november 1st early action deadline?

-Any response would be greatly appreciated!!

Sending an October SAT score for early action is no problem, just list the college you want to send to when you take the SAT. I think you have a decent shot at Virginia Tech, but you will be hurt by the fact that Computer Science is a component of engineering, which is one of VT’s only competitive programs (and by far the most competitive). For out-of-state, Purdue might be a bit difficult for you, but by no means out of reach. I can’t speak to the others without some additional research.

SAT can for sure be in in time, list them and have it directly to the school. Since you listed no EC its tough to get an idea of where you stand compared to your peers with similar stats but if you do a bit better on the SAT next time, none of those schools are out of reach. Amherst and Purdue are gonna be a lower chance for you just because they are among the more selective schools on your list, but if you do better on your next SAT you could still have a shot. My advice: find out the school you want to go to most and go ED on it to improve your odds but still apply to all those places and you’ll get in to at least a couple hopefully.
Good luck on your SAT!

Thanks for the responses! I actually had an interview at purdue in April and they seemed rather excited for me to be coming from out of state. But yeah, I will try to work on that October sat.

Virginia Tech is a reach for you. Engineering and computer science are very competitive. The average weighted GPA of admitted students is more in the 3.9 range.

Pitt is competitive as well. The Common Data Set from the schools you are looking at will give you info about your chances. The average GPA of admitted students to the main campus this year was 3.97. The middle SAT scores were 1180-1360 (CR and M). Good luck.

Virginia Tech looks at CR and M. Purdue average admitted GPA is 3.7. Middle SAT’s are 1080-1320. Why do you not have any instate Connecticut colleges on your list?

Your GPA is low for VT, even though they have a high acceptance rate it is still very competitive to get in. However, your SAT’s are alright, I don’t think Tech looks at writing. If you take it again and get your math score in the 700 range that would really help you. If you have done well in Math and Science classes and your grades increase though the years you should have a better chance. My sibling applied to engineering with a 3.6/3.7, lower SATs, slightly declining grades and got waitlisted.

I think regular decision would be best. Do well in physics, cs, and especially calc.

My chances for purdue computer engineering? anyone?
