Chances at UT Austin Nursing? (auto admit)

Hello everyone! I’m a second-semester junior applying to UT in less than six months. I’m really hoping to get into UT’s School of Nursing, I visited last year and I’m simply in love with the program. That being said, I haven’t actually applied and I still have a lot of work to do before I submit my application and cross my fingers, but any suggestions from admitted UT Nursing majors or fellow Nursing hopefuls would be much appreciated, regarding whether or not I should try new extracurriculars, retake tests, etc.

College: School of Nursing

Stats:
SAT: 2250 (750 CR, 770 M, 730 W, 11 on Essay)
SAT IIs: none so far
GPA: 4.0 UW, 118/130 W (my school has a really weird weighting system where they take your numerical grade for a semester and multiply it by 1.1, 1.2,or 1.3 depending on the level of the class; 130 would be taking all AP classes since freshman year and making 100’s in all of them, which I’m pretty sure is impossible)
Rank: 1/609
Other stats: I have taken 4 AP classes since sophomore year (Human Geo, World History, French Lang, and Psychology) and made 5’s on all of them. This year I’m taking AP Lang and Comp, APUSH, APES, and AP Art History; if I make at least a 4 on all four of those exams I will qualify for National AP Scholar by the end of my junior year. I scored a 1500/1520 on the 2015 PSAT, which hopefully will set me squarely in NMSF territory for Texas. I have played the flute since sixth grade and have competed at the state level for solo and ensemble since freshman year, I am currently a drum major for my school’s marching band and won an Outstanding Drum Major award at an area marching contest, I have been on the band leadership team for two years now, I am in the National Honor Society, I have placed in the finals at state-level French contests since freshman year, I’ve won some school awards for fine arts/social sciences/foreign languages, etc.
Hook (if any): first generation college student, my mother recently graduated with an associate’s degree and my father completed his associate’s degree through prison correspondence

Location/Person:
State or Country: Texas
School Type: Public, not especially competitive
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female

Other Factors: I am the first person to attend college in my family and am thrilled to qualify for automatic admission to a world-class university like UT. My parents and I are fairly clueless about the whole college admissions process, and most of what I’ve learned has been gleaned from the Internet and the little pamphlets in my counselor’s office that nobody else seems to read. I recognize that most of the attention right now is focused on the actual seniors who have actually applied to college, but I would really appreciate any advice anyone can give to boost my chances. Thank you for your time!

Edit: my class rank is 1/609, not 1/6009. Yikes!

I strongly believe you’re a lock! Congrats on your impressive stats. When you write your essay for nursing - make sure you’re passionate about why you want to be a nurse. Those who have written their essay talking about earning their nursing degree to be ready for medical school or other such springboards not in the nursing field notoriously get rejected!

@go4fan56 Thank you very much! I will definitely keep that in mind!

A few things to keep in mind: stay focused and continue to excel in your classes your senior year. Remember that if you maintain your rank as valedictorian, you will qualify for the first year tuition free at a state school!

Like @go4fan56 stated- put a lot of effort into your essays & good luck!

Thank you @bookmom7! Grades are my top priority for the next year and a half, my family really needs all the financial aid we can get and a year of free tuition would be super helpful.

I’ve started brainstorming my essays for topics B, C, and S; I may go ahead and write A as well.

Has anyone been accepted to the School of Nursing yet? I’ve been looking all over for SAT/ACT and GPA averages for accepted Nursing students; they’re significantly more difficult to find than statistics for say, McCombs or Cockrell admitted students.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about nursing!

But you are an excellent candidate. In addition to UT, apply to some schools where you can get a full ride (or close to a full ride) and also to some of the very top schools that offer fantastic financial aid.

I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate the positive responses!

@txstella right now the only two schools I’m positive I’m applying to are UT and TCU, since both offer great direct-entry nursing programs with the advantage of instate tuition at UT and generous merit aid at TCU! I do need to do more research and find a few more places to decide, just in case next year I spontaneously decide I absolutely detest Texas and must move to the other side of the country for college ASAP (unlikely to happen, but still).
