I’m a senior in high school currently applying to colleges right now. I want to study nursing at UT Austin and was wondering what my chances are considering that it is super competitive to get into. Also any advice from current/former nursing students regarding their admissions process would be greatly appreciated!

High school grades won’t matter in nursing. To do nursing in Texas, you have to complete your first 2 years with your science prerequisites and apply separately. It can be very hard to get into, so most students opt to complete their first 2 years at community college and transfer to whichever school they get accepted. In fact, the top BSN programs in Texas are 2 year upper-division only schools. UT-Health San Antonio and UT Health Houston, for example. The best thing to do is just enroll at community college and get your first 2 years completed with your science prerequisites and transfer. It’ll save you a ton of money.

You’ve made the cut for admissions but I am not familiar with the criteria for the nursing major. Universities that offer BSN programs will give the students who do their 2 year pre-req’s priority over a transfer, if you are competitive. So if you get into UTAustin for pre nursing, you would have a better chance of getting into the nursing school there than a lesser ranked one. That said, even if you get into UTAustin, when you do apply to nursing school, you should apply to not only UT, but others as well, as a back up, especially if your science GPA isn’t as competitive as it could be. Maintaining as close to a 4.0 as possible with your science GPA is a big component to being accepted into nursing school in addition to your overall GPA.
My D is going through it right now at UT Arlington with a 3.81 overall GPA and 4.0 science. She is applying now for fall 2019 and will find out in March if she made the cut. She is sweating it. A top nursing school will be competitive.
