Chances at UT-Austin? Please do Reply!!!

Hi everyone, UT-Austin is one of my top choices
for its undergrad business and advertising program (I plan to do a major in business and choosing between a double major or a minor in advertising)

i was wondering if any of you can give me some pointers and advice to get in...

brief summary of myself:

Currently a Junior, live in Duluth, Georgia. Indian

3.8ish GPA (weighted) -- do they go under GPA or under numerical value? Numerical Value (almost the same unweighted/weighted): 95

Decent SAT: 1980 (2nd time) 700 writing, 650 math, 630 reading, Essay: 10

Class rigor- pretty rigorous, by the end of senior year i'll have 6 APs under my belt (oddly enough, I chose the APs that College Board recommends if I want to go into Business by chance), and just about every honors class to think of (except 3). Our school has been named Best Public High School in GA for 3 consecutive years. Unfortunately, even with a 95 average, I'm still only under the 17-19 percentile.. =(

Lots of ECs....most importantly, I am the Creative Director of our school website (only 10 applicants in the entire school are chosen to work on the website...and being a REALLY competitive school..its a big deal.)

Countless volunteer hours in service organizations....Red Cross, Hospital Volunteens, Hindi School Volunteer (over 3 years)....lots of it. Not including top honors awards, National Honor Society, Legion of Honor, Honor Rolls, etc etc., VIP Award; its a teacher nomination award for excellence in character (2 nominations)

Duke TIP participant for 2 summers (its a lot like one of those Leadership conferences)...President of Model United Nations, Treasurer of the Red Cross Club.

Also, some of my friends and I have started a web design and graphics design company..its pretty intense. We've had a decent amount of clients and our numbers are increasing. We've gone the whole nine yards..everything from business emails/phone calls and marketing schemes. In fancy terms, I've been appointed Chief Design and Marketing ..and work on almost all the designs and deal with marketing issues and pricing

I will be interning at 2 companies in the coming year....an advertising agency and also help out in a statewide Indian Culture Magazine. I interned at a small company 2 summers ago, Royal Gems Inc.

I also have about 4 AWESOME teacher recs. My essays are great!

That being said...will Emory see my passion for business and advertising? Anyone think I have a genuine chance? ..could me being an Indian do any justice?

I'm not sure if this is an important addition or not..but Financial Aid is not that big of a concern.

Thanks so much! =)

Edit: That being said...will Texas see my passion for business and advertising? Anyone think I have a genuine chance? ..could me being an Indian do any justice?

also, will sending in a portfolio of all the stuff I've done in accordance to business and advertising (Business Emails sent to clients, Company website, Advertising graphics created, etc etc.) Help?

You need to raise your class rank and SAT for the UT Business school, they look heavily upon that. With those stats, I'd say no. They could put you into a undeclared liberal arts major though.

I got the impression that UT does not use the same ball crushing standards of top 1-3% rank for OOS applicants. When I toured some undergrad B-schools ouside of Texas, I met alot of people who got into UT Business but only got into Liberal Arts at THEIR state U. It struck me as strange.

To the OP: UT will want a resume in the format that they have on their admissions site. You can put your life's work onto that and should be fine.

Yeah there is no way you could get into McCombs with those stats. If they did take race into consideration, which they don't anymore, being Indian would not help you, since UT is overwhelmed by Indians/Asians. The in-state admissions for McCombs is based on class rank, and they usually end up somewhere around the top 5% of a school. So that means that it will be even harder to get in as an OOS. I doubt you could increase your rank or SAT enough to be considered. I think you should focus on getting into UT first; your stats may not even do that much.

The thing with our school is its so competitive that even a guy with a 99 avg won't be in the top 10%..we've sent 2 kids to MIT, 6 to Duke and about 9 more to HYP... its ridiculously competitive.

The valedictorian this year had a 107 numerical avg.

Won't UT-Austin notice that?!

UT doesn't care about the competitiveness of your school, at least for in-staters.

make sure you turn in a resume and complete ALL essays

I think our valedictorian-saludictorian had a 108-107.. and 107 107 106 106 there after. Our school(upper/middle class suburbia) is probably just as competitive as yours with a 800 person senior class and 1 Harvard, 1 MIT, atleast 6 to Rice, and more people to UT and A&M then I can count.

And my friend with a 1400 Math+reading got cap'ed(rejected) with a 4.19 Weighted GPA and was in the top 20%. All this was instate, so it will be even more ridiculous OOS. So yes you still have to be worried about getting in.

dammit. =(

foxshox's situation is what happened to me, except I was summer programmed

You're going to have a difficult time getting into business, especially because of your low GPA and low percentile added to the fact you're out of state. Chances are, UT's not going to have heard of your high school since Texas alone has plenty of good high schools. In addition, because UT doesn't look at the writing section to calculate your SAT, your SAT is only a 1280, which is pretty low for UT business. Unless you can raise your numbers, you're going to have to hope UT is really interested in your other credentials.

You said you're a junior, so that leads me to wonder how you already have all your teacher recs and your essays completed? There's always a possibility UT will change their essay prompts.

Correction Nik- TWO to MIT

Whose the other one? Tommy?.. I still don't believe him.

well... take it from me. I'd suggest u find a back up school and good ones just in case things don't pan out.
I was rejected from UT Austin this year
SF, California, Lowell High school (one of the best and most competitive in the nation, no lie)
GPA: 3.85 weighted (w/ improving grade trend, 4.2 Junior year grades, top 20%)
My school's grades are actually deflated due to the hardship of the school
ACT: 31
SAT: 2050
4 years of football (all conference, team captain...etc), 200 hours of CS, and over 150 hours of paid work, 2 clubs,

Seems pretty similar to your stats I would say. Great recs and my essays were pretty much "superb".

I was accepted to Indiana and Michigan though, both with excellent Business schools, so you might want to check that out. I have heard people w/ my stats get into cornell, which also has a great business school.

=) thanks for the heads up..

yeah, i'm also looking into UMich Ann Arbor, Emory, NYU-Stern Business and UNC-CH as my top choices.

(i have 2 schools as my safeties, UGA Bleh and State Double Bleh and GaTech)

They aren't completed..I mean to say I have 4 great teacher recs and my essays WILL be great.

Even if you have 10 great teacher recs, unless you have something like huge like you won national science fair for something pertaining to your wanted field of study, with those grades it will be very difficult to get into McCombs.

Unless you get a higher score on your SAT, you won't be getting into UT mccombs or the other schools you listed (for UNC-CH people with 2200+ SAT scores got rejected)

yeah... but despite all the bad headups that people say, its only to make u not too dissappointed. You might still get in, who knows? so just try to your best and you won't regret it. Michigan is a good shot, but u should still raise your SAT scores. Good luck bud.
