Hello CC, I will be an upcoming Senior in High School and would like to know if I have a chance at this school. I recently visited the campus as my older sibling will be a freshman this fall. Unfortunately I am not in the top 7%, so I cannot be automatically admitted.
GPA - 4.167 / 90.76 ( Not sure if this is weighted or unweighted )
SAT - 1920 (1330 M + CR )
Class Rank - ~15%
Extracurricular:
- Church Usher
- Summer Intern at Local Library
- NHS
- Varsity Tennis ( 4 Yrs )
- Piano

AP - Predicting 4's on my AP exams. Didn't prepare much.

At this point I would like advice on what I should improve on. Standardized test scores? Getting to at least top 10% in class? I feel like I am on the right track, but am nervous / anxious or getting admitted.
My first choice will be comp. science.

I looked at the UT website and apparently the average SAT score for 2012 non auto admit Texas residents was 1902. If you have the option of taking the SAT again or taking the ACT you should do that. After UT takes the auto admits, there are few places left for freshmen so you want to be as competitive as possible. The GPA you posted is most likely weighted, so your unweighted GPA is what will be looked at when making admission decisions. I wouldn’t necessarily say you are a match, but you definitely have a good chance.

Thank you for your replies, I’m starting to feel a bit more optimistic about myself. I’m planning to take the SAT again in October, so I have ample time to prepare ( Maybe take the ACT, see how it fares in comparison to SAT ). If I get all A’s this upcoming year maybe I’ll get into top 10%, and I’m sure UT admissions will take that into consideration.

P.S. - Only ~110 classmates which makes it much more competitive. That’s just how it is unfortunately!

Class rank is more important than GPA as far as UT is concerned. So increasing class rank is important. But unless you can break the 7% mark then increasing your test scores will be a bigger help. Your current score is around the 60% mark. Try getting it to the 75% mark which would be a 2020. Submitting a great essay will be needed too.
