By the way, I am applying for admission to either the school of communications or the business school.

Bump?
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

I don’t really see why you wouldn’t get in, plus you’re in-state so that helps.

Nosike- Really? I’m worried because I’m not in the top 8%.

i would guess no. Im looking at ut austin, while im out of state, so it may be different, but i have a 4.2 W and 3.9 UW and a 1890 SAT and im right on the border. so you need to get either or SAT or gpa up. in state helps.

good luck

mccormickt12- The GPA, SAT/ACT, and class rank will all be going up. Once this disaster with my school about my GPA is over, I’m positive that my GPA and my rank will go up. Plus, I’m definitely retaking at least the SAT and am predicting a decent score increase. We just won’t know until after I’ve retaken the test and my GPA is finally figured.

Bump.

Bump? Thanks to those of you who have replied.

Wait I sec, when I said I don’t see why you wouldn’t get in; I didn’t look at your SAT score. That’s a 1770 composite score which is pretty low tbh. Getting it up to 2000 would probably secure you a spot. UT Austin is the best in Texas, but overall it’s not really a high profile school.

Thanks for the input.
Bump!

you’re in-state, you should really be fine.

It is unlikely that you would have gotten in this year or last year, since space for non-top 10% in state kids was nearly non existent.

Next year will be the first year of UT using the top 8% rule, and rank is a critical factor at UT, especially in popular schools such as business and communications. Since you are at a Texas public high school, your guidance counselor should be able to tell you how students with statistics similar to yours have fared in UT admissions.

I’m sure you know this, but I’ll write it anyway: There are a reasonable number of students at UT with grades and test scores like yours, but they were automatic admits from inner city schools or remote rural schools where they were at the top of their classes. Because of the top 10% law (now the top 8% law), class rank is the main criterion used for in-state student admission at UT. (If you end up in the top 8% of your class, you’ll be in automatically, of course.)

The Texas admission system is unusual, to say the least, and looking at profiles of admitted students is not helpful since the vast majority of them were admitted with no regard to their test scores or extracurricular activities. Neither the business school nor the college of communication will have a lot of space for students who are not in the top 8% once the top 8% are in. Of course you have a chance, but it is hard to say if you will be admitted. Make sure you have several back up plans that you like, or - if you are rejected - accept the CAP offer and go in as a sophomore. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone!

My parents would LOVE if I took advantage of CAP. I live in a town not far from one of the UT branches, so I could come home on weekends. I could probably even live at home and drive back and forth everyday. It’s just not what I want to do, though.

Thanks again.
