Chances at UT

I go to one of the hardest high schools and this yr just happened to be the year with the hardest rankings. My GPA in last years class would have made me 34, but 4 years ago I would have been around number 14. I wonder what my chances at getting in to UT are.

Counselor Recommendations: Pretty good
Essays: Pretty Good, spoke about cultural and religious tolerance and violence, charity through an extended metaphor and service

SAT: Math: 650, Reading: 670, Writing: 710
ACT: Composite 29

Just wondering what my chances are. So far people in second and third quarter have gotten in, but they have had amazing SAT and ACT scores.
My major is clinical laboratory science and my second choice is anthropology...

please help me.

ACT/SAT are decent, but not good, its higher than average, but your barely sitting in the top 20 percent..hopefully the awards you have will do it for you, its 50/50 to me.

Sorry to tell you, but UT’s admission formula does not allow them to reward you much for going to a “hard” high school.

You can get .1 added to your “Projected GPA” if you took a hard course load. That’s it.

They actually award you MORE for going to a high school from a lower socioeconomic background than the traditional “best schools.”

Sorry. But you really just get hurt. People from these schools do tend to have some of the best SAT scores, best preparedness for their essays, and good ECs, and these help them. But they get no credit in particular for attending a “great school.”

Well, I’m not going to say that you WON’T get in. I tend to refrain from telling people that because in actuality, no one but those in the admissions office knows who will be accepted and who will be rejected (unless you’re living under the Texas top 10% law). So I’m going to say keep your head up, stay positive, and cross your fingers. However, hopefully you’ve applied to other colleges as well and you haven’t put all of your eggs in one basket. I hope to see you next year!

I’m thinking you have a good shot. Your grade point average is pretty high and your test scores are above average for students admitted from Texas but not in the top ten percent. And it seems as if you are a minority (I’m just guessing, though), which will also help. But, like lalexi08 said, I hope you applied to other schools as well. Good luck!

I forgot to mention my course load for this year

AB calc AP
AP Bio
AP Eng 4
AP Spanish Language
Medical surgical Technology
Choir

last year I took Ap Physics and AP English 3

Hopefully it works out

Im am not a minority but socioeconomic wise I would be in the lower end of the financial column

The course difficulty doesn’t make a big difference at all.

If you exceed the minimum entry requirements, you do receive bonus points, but there is no bonus for a challenging schedule (their logic for this is that not all high schools offer AP curricula).

Lower socioeconomic wise does help you if you are in that category. To have a big impact in your admission you would need to likely be under $40k a year family income, so if you fall in that category it will help you out quite a bit.

What exactly is “AP English 3?” Is it AP English in preparation for the AP Language test?

Sorry, just wondering.

Kiki;

Yea, it is the same thing.

br1: 2500 hours of service? Thats crazyinsane. I might have like 30.

Yes, I agree. 2500 hours is ridiculousness. I have about 500 and I thought that was something.

will my service help any? Also I think my major is a bit obscure so do you think that will help? I guess it is just because I heard a friend got in and he is ranked in the 100s but he is hispanic so hispanic scholar and he is really good at standardized tests…

Each major has a certain number of places. If there is a clinical lab major at UT (I’m not incredibly familiar with NatSci beyond knowing they have Bio and Math departments), then they will have a specific number of students to admit and will take the best qualified. Then you would be considered for your second choice, and then as an undeclared student. If smaller numbers apply then have space, I think you have a better chance, but I’m not sure.

The service hours go in to the personal index. Your ECs and leadership are 4/7 of the Personal Achievement Index and you will do well there. Essays are the other 3/7.

Standardized tests help a lot, I’m not going to lie. Just based on UT’s formula, the higher you score, your chances of getting in increase exponentially. Affirmative action can’t officially come in to play, so he likely got in just on his scores and leadership alone.

“Each major has a certain number of places.”

I was always wondering, if someone put some really random and unpopular major, like Jewish Studies or Slavic Studies as their first major choice, would their shot of being admitted be considerably greater than if they put something more popular, like English or Political Science?

if you could just pull up that SAT, it’d be a sure shot man..or at least as close to one as you’re gonna get.

distinguish yourself in the essays b/c right now it is the only thing you have control over…if you are applying for this round. anyone can have sexy grades, but not everyone can pull off a great essay. make it your job to do so ^___^

I like to think I did a pretty good job on my essays. Hopefully it plays out but what do you guys think of Summer Admission? Will I have a good shot at Summer Admission?

i think i might know you. we might actually go to the same school. isn’t the top 10% law awful for those of us who want a better education at a good school? it’s as if they’re almost punished for doing well just because the school they go to is more competitive. i can’t believe your rank is so low for a great GPA. that law is unfair for the smart people (like you) who deserve a place in schools like UT. i hope you make it in. let us know when you do.

There are two AP English Classes, Comp and Lit, right? Maybe at this school they call one 3 and the other one 4?

yes you are right, it is Eng 3 is comp and Eng 4 is lit

Northside Health Careers High School is my school… :-). Love it but not a big fan of the top 10% rule.

It actually depends on the school.

Both AP courses are composition courses. One is AP English Literature and Composition, and one is AP English Language and Composition. Lang is based on rhetoric and essays and such, while Lit is based on writing about and interpreting passages of literature.

At my school, Lit is English 3 AP and Lang is English 4 AP.

And because of the way UT structures the credit, you don’t need to take the Language exam if you get 600+ on SAT writing, it covers the same credit.

At UT, you get 3 credits for RHE 306 if you have a 600+ on the SAT writing or a 26+ on the ACT writing or a 3 or 4 or 5 on the AP Language and Composition test.

You also get 3 credits for English 316 if you get a 4 or 5 on the AP English Lit test.
