hi guys,
I'm Linda Lucy and I am applying to UVA and Tech and Georgetown as top choices. What do you think my chances are?
GPA-3.4

SAT-Writing-700
Math-550
Reading-730

In state (Virginia beach area)

tons of extracariculars (president of Dancer's Club, Secretary of French honor
society, National honor society, National math honor society, vp of young liberals club)

6 APs

Race-white, female

Community service:
food bank (since 9th grade)
homeless shelter (9-11th)

only problem is that I got a D in Calculus my junior year. and that dragged down my gpa and class rank (20%).

So what do you guys think??

I think that you will be in at VT. This is just a theory, but I have a feeling less people will be applying there this year after what happened with the shootings. In theory, the acceptance rate should go up.

As for UVA, you are in state which will help a ton. With your challenging work load and good right-brain SAT's, you should have a pretty good chance. Not for sure, but a good chance.

Be sure to mention your problems with math, and how you are striving to improve them.

Georgetown is probably going to be a reach. But definitely apply, as you never know.

thanks! So you don't think that they would be to mad at me for almost failing calculus?

Hey, everyone screws up. I personally didn't do well at all sophomore year (3.5 weighted) I think that if you can show them that you have improved since then, you'll definitely stand a chance. Afterall, places like Georgetown want people, not computers with good grades.

Virginia Tech- match
Georgetown- high match, slight reach
UVA- reach (yes instate will help, but 1280 is near the bottom
25th % and the gpa doesnt help much)

Hey Linda Lucy,

I'm also in-state and applying to UVA & Georgetown. I think you're definitely in at VT (but those math scores might bring you down a little, since there admission rate is so number based). Although UVA seems like a reach, I have known SO many people that have gotten in with lower scores than you. In-state helps so much! Georgetown is a big reach, but with strong essays and recs, you could definitely make it. Good luck!

My son attends JMU. There are many students there that have similar SAT scores to yours, and did not get into UVA. Most students at JMU that he knows also had a higher HS gpa (more like a 3.6/3.8. That includes students that he knows from the Virginia Beach area). Good luck! I think that you are a match for VT.

yea at my school (richmond va) no one gets in who has under a 4.6 (w) gpa or a 3.8 (uw)....unless you're black or latino. for those groups they lower the standards greatly (especially blacks because they're trying to get a larger black population so its proportional to the state)
