In-State: Virginia
GPA: 3.9
Rank: top 15ish out of 200 (my school had 19 admitted this year to UVA)
SAT: 1930
EC's: NHS, some clubs, internship at bank over summer, played basketball fresh and soph years

What part of Virginia? If NoVA, you should probably to try to nudge the SATs up a bit but otherwise you look good.

I'd retake the SATs then and try to nudge them up some. The problem you face is that there are tons of kids from this neck of the woods applying to those same schools (and other VA state schools as well) and UVA and WM can't take too many of them because of their obligation to serve the whole state. I don't know if you saw the Post article a couple of weeks ago on the boy who got shut out from several state schools, including at least one of those two, plus (I think) Tech and JMU -- despite having good stats and recs. Sorry if this adds to your stress!

Given the number of kids your school sends yearly, your counselor would probably have better and more specific ideas for how to maximize your chances (and may tell you that I'm full of cr*p anyway). You're certainly in the ball park, but there are a lot of other people in that same area of the bleachers! Best of luck. The great thing about Virginia is that it has a lot of depth in state schools so you may want to look at some of the others just in case.

Just so you know how much salt to take my opinion with, I'm the parent of three daughters in NoVA public schools, one of whom went through the college mill last year and the second of whom is a rising senior so is in the process of plunging in. So I have some experience but my data set is limited.

Here's a nice interview with the deans of admissions at UVA and Georgetown. It appeared in the Washingtonian a while back.
