Chances at UVA! Please do Reply!!

Hi everyone, UVA is one of my top choices
for its undergrad business (and advertising?) program (I plan to do a major in business and choosing between a double major or a minor in advertising)

i was wondering if any of you can give me some pointers and advice to get in...

brief summary of myself:

Currently a Junior, live in Duluth, Georgia. Indian

GPA: Not really known, our school does not do GPA, However, I do currently have a 95 weighted cumulative avg. (Its basically the same unweighted)

Decent SAT: 1980 (2nd time) 700 writing, 650 math, 630 reading, Essay: 10

Class rigor- pretty rigorous, by the end of senior year i'll have 7 APs under my belt (oddly enough, I chose the APs that College Board recommends if I want to go into Business by chance), and just about every honors class to think of (except 3). Our school has been named Best Public High School in GA for 3 consecutive years. Unfortunately, even with a 95 average, I'm still only under the 17-19 percentile.. =(

ECs: Red Cross Club, Habitat for Humanity, Kaleidescope (aka Diversity Club), Model UN ....most importantly, I am the Creative Director of our school website (only 10 applicants in the entire school are chosen to work on the website...and being a REALLY competitive school..its a big deal.)

Countless volunteer hours in service organizations....Hospital Volunteens, Hindi School Volunteer (over 3 years)....lots of it. Not including top honors awards, National Honor Society, Legion of Honor, Honor Rolls, etc etc., VIP Award; its a teacher nomination award for excellence in character (2 nominations)

Duke TIP participant for 2 summers (its a lot like one of those Leadership conferences)...President of Model United Nations, Treasurer/Co-founder of the Red Cross Club.

Also, some of my friends and I have started a web design and graphics design company..its pretty intense. We've had a decent amount of clients and our numbers are increasing. We've gone the whole nine yards..everything from business emails/phone calls and marketing schemes. In fancy terms, I've been appointed Chief Design and Marketing ..and work on almost all the designs and deal with marketing issues and pricing

Interning at 2 companies in the coming year....an advertising agency and in a statewide Indian Culture Magazine. I interned at a small company 2 summers ago, Royal Gems Inc. I am volunteering with the Red Cross this summer.

Another thing, I'm currently in the process of setting up a fundraiser to get money to produce brochures about HIV/AIDS (which I am designing) to the Indian Red Cross who will then distribute them to some schools who do not teach sex ed..(My family has huge connections to the Red Cross in India, its unbelievable)...We'll see if this works, I've been really concerned about India's fight against AIDS, my interest started up after a pretty profound conversation about the state of India on a trip to Virginia Beach.

I also have about 3 AWESOME teacher recs. My essays will be great!

That being said...will UVA see my passion for business and advertising, and my joy for community service? Anyone think I have a genuine chance? ..could me being an Indian do any justice?
I plan to send in a portfolio of all business/advertising things i've done (business emails, website work, brochure copy, etc.)

I'm not sure if this is an important addition or not..but Financial Aid might be a bit of concern (Not too much though)

Thanks so much! =)

"..could me being an Indian do any justice?"

No, that won't help you. Unless you mean Indian as in Native American (which you obviously don't) in which case that will help you a lot. If you mean Indian as in Asian, then no, that will not help you at all. Being Indian will not gain you any sort of advantage for any top national universities.

Honestly, your odds as an out of state student do not seem very good at all. Your SAT score for an out of state student is low and your rank is very low. Best advice I can give you is bring your SAT score up... way up. Even then your chances don't look good - UVA out of state is very difficult.

Also, I don't think you understand how McIntire - the business school - is set up at UVA. I don't know much about it either and don't feel like typing up the little that I do know about it. I'll leave that for someone more knowledgeable on McIntire.

your SAT is not decent at all for indian. :/ and your school seems very lenient to students' grades so the rank is going to hurt you.

financial aid is not an issue because you'll get a lot of grant.

i think you stand a good chance actually, but hey these chance threads aren't really useful in my opinion

I agree with doctorsboy. I hate chance threads, and I know, I know, I made one quite some time ago. But no one here ever knows what anyone's chance is, because there will always be something that the adcoms might love, or might hate. If you post a chance thread and everyone says "no chance", then you won't put your heart into your application, because you'll be subconciously thinking that it doesnt matter because youre a reject. If everyone says "great chance! in!" and you do end up rejected, you might not have other options because you were wrapped up into one school you thought was a guarentee.

So, you're doing fine. Keep up the hard work, push yourself, and just keep your mind open and carefree :)

It's important that you understand that you don't apply for the business school (McIntyre) until you are in your sophomore year (for acceptance in the junior year). What you do first is apply to be accepted to the general school (University of Virginia).

Of those who are accepted to the University of Virginia, something like 63% of those who apply will get into the business school (it's actually called the McIntryre School of Commerce). There are a lot of pre-business prequisite courses you need to take while at the University of Virginia to get into the Commerce school: (two years of foreign language, two accounting courses, two economics courses, one calculus course, one statistics course, one English course, one communications/public speaking course, etc.).

There are 6 possible majors in the business/commerce school: Management, Accounting, Finance, International Business, Marketing or Information/Computer Systems.

You still have 9 months to improve your SATs before applying to UVA. But you might also consider schools like Boston College, Villanova, Indiana, and Penn State. All of these also have good business schools, but are slightly easier to get into than the University of Virginia.

I rank you a Slight Reach for Virginia with your current SAT scores. This could change to Match if you can increase your scores to about a 2050 overall, with the emphasis being on improving the Critical Reading and Math scores.

Good luck.

My stats are like yours, except my grades were worse (my rank is higher though because I guess I go to a pretty dumb high school) and my SAT was higher (2250). However I've always heard that UVA cares a load about GPA and not so much about SAT. Which means you should get in. Because I did... with roughly a 89 grade avg. Just write two really good short answer essays. I had fun with those and that might have helped. (Oh and I'm Asian too so we're in the same boat. At UVA there might be a little bit of advantage since only 10% of their pop. is Asian and they're always trying to diversify just a bit more.) Good luck!

PS Indiana Kelley direct admit is easy cake. That should be a safety school for you.

Whoops I lied... 17% are asian. Not helpful then.
