My school offers 2 APs. I go to a very small, rural, public school in Washington state. Can that be used as a hook? How?
Also raised by single mom. Is that a hook too?

ECs:
Varsity Golf
Knowledge Bowl
FBLA
(competed @ state level in above)
FRC FIRST Robotics
Technology Club (4 members last year)
Was a class officer last year (doesn't mean much at a small school, also was officer in clubs)
The last two summers I have worked at a nearby engineering company. This summer I did some Research and Development type work.

Colleges:
UVa (EA)
UW
Stanford
Vanderbilt
Boston College
USC
Northwestern

Probably going to add a few more schools, I didn't plan well for this year.

If maybe you say you’re disappointed at the small selection of APs at your school and relate that to how your interested in going to their school due to large selection (even though most schools offer large selections), you could use that as a hook.

If you write a good essay on being raised by a single mother and overcoming odds, it’s a good hook

UVA: I’ll assume you’re out of state: Match - Low Reach (UVA takes in like 83% instate)
Vanderbilt: Low Reach
Stanford: Super High Reach
Northwestern: Low Reach
USC: Match

20more he/she said washington state, with your ACT I would have gone for Vandy ED if you are interested and money is not an objective. Uva is not easy and now you have to go through RD to other schools.
