I'm I ninth grader looking to apply to multiple high schools as a repeat in 9th grade.
Schools are Groton, Deerfield, Andover, Lawerenceville, and Choate.

SSAT: something like 95 English, 83 Math, And 65 in Vocab, 83 average, THOSE ARE MY AVERAGES TO GOING INTO 10TH GRADE so they may rise from that.

Grades are OK, A+ in Algebra 2, A in Geometry, B in Spanish, A- In physics, B in history, and B- in English, (all honors)

Sports are crew and soccer, ok at soccer, and coxswain at crew, nothing to get me recruited for, but pretty good none the less.

Im also in student gov, math team, and have done some com. service.

So far I've only had 1 interview (Deerfield) , and it went pretty well.

So what do you think my chances are, thank you!

less than 1 percent. Why are you trying to get held back?

I am young for my age since I skipped an early year at school

Were you born in 2000 or 1999? There are lots of qualified candidates applying for grade 9 in their age group/year. I have heard about kids repeating a grade when they apply for grade 11 they go into grade 10.
Did you apply last year?

I didn’t apply last year, and i am july 1999

R0b0Penguin, you are the same age as any current Grade 9 student depending on the cut-off date. The students who are applying this year for grade 9 are born in 2000 (majority), so the AO would like to know the reason, why you are applying as a repeat grade 10.
What did the AO ask you about it at your interview at Deerfield? How did you answer that?

Well my interviewer said a lot of students now a days are doing the same. She asked what some of the reasons I would do so, and I said how it would help me a lot in sports because of my size, and also would prepare me more academically for college.

If you are young or small for your grade, applying as repeat is a strategic move. A LARGE proportion of kids in the top BS are repeats, so you will be in good company. Had we any idea of the prevalence of it, we would have considered if for son1 who is already enrolled. Repeating confers significant academic and athletic advantage. Plus, for boys, there is the extra social perk, as girls often prefer to date older boys. Colleges do not look unfavorably upon it.

Your grades/SSAT/ECs keep you in the running for all the schools on your list.

Thanks! May I ask which school your son goes to?

R0b0Penguin, I think you have handled it very well:). I also would suggest to contact the coaches of those particular schools where you apply and see, if you can schedule a meeting with them. If they like you, it will be another plus to the AO decision. Good luck!

GMTplus7 TOTALLY correct-- LOTS of repeat 9th graders at the specific schools you mention (my son is at Deerfield). The schools on your list, however, are among the VERY most selective. Your grades and scores are fine, but won’t put you at the very top of applicants (but shouldn’t rule you out either), so recs, essays, interviews will all matter. But do think about broadening your list a bit-- include some schools that admit a somewhat higher percentage of applicants. There are SO many great schools out there. Maybe go to hidden gems thread? Again, totally fine to apply to the schools on your list, and repeating 9th is common (and colleges think that’s totally fine)-- but maybe add one or two others if you really want to be sure to be admitted to a BS.

Thanks for the insight. Most of this is mostly just to get a shot. The school I go to now is basically my safety school. It’s a great school, one of the top public schools in the state, so it’s not a need that I go to private school. I am mostly doing it so I can get a very good education, knowing I might not make it.
