Chances at W&M/apply ED?

Hi! I am a rising senior from Baltimore, MD. W&M is undoubtedly my first choice. I am starting to get a little concerned; after reading the chance threads and credentials of other prospective applicants, I am aware that my application is quite different.
I attend a magnet school for the arts, therefore my classes are different and I do not have access to an extensive selection of AP courses. My stats look something like this:

GPA: W 5.2 UW ?
Class Rank: Top 10-15%
All Honors/ GT/AP classes with the exception of courses like health and freshman year foreign language

EC's:
VP of NEHS
Historian of NHS
School Improvement Team (10-12)
Lacrosse (10- 12)
Field Hockey (11,12)
Employment (16 hours/ week)
Volunteer work
Swim Team
Art (9 years)

A significant part of my life is dedicated to the production of art. I take classes in Painting, Drawing, Photography, and Sculpture; during the school year I spend up to 40 hours per week on art homework. I hope to continue with fine arts in college. I have studied abroad through a competitive Maryland Institute College of the Arts painting program.

SATs:
680 CR
630M
680 W

SAT 2's:
640: English Literature
650: US History

I do plan to retake the SAT's and aim for at least a 1360 (3rd retake)
By the time I graduate, I will have taken 6 AP classes and & 7 AP tests.
I hope to apply ED, as I really love this school!
I have had an interview and will be submitting an arts supplement and a painting for my optional submission.

Please, any thoughts or advice would be very helpful. Thank you!

Bring up the SAT just a smidgen (I also recommend trying the ACT. Many find one or the other easier.) and I can see you being…pretty much a definite admit.

You immediately stand out to me due to the major art focus. Add that in with your rigorous academic schedule and great non-art EC’s, and I think you’re in.

I mean, I can’t find an immediate fault other a slightly lax SAT score (and the score you already have isn’t bad either). You work, you volunteer, you have a solid direction and a passion…

I can see the adcoms taking a liking to you. You don’t seem like a “typical applicant” to me.

Personally, I think you have a great shot, and I think you’d be an awesome W&M student.

But I would still work to get the SAT/ACT up just a little more. OOS for W&M is notoriously rigorous even though admissions tends to be very holistic.

Anyway. You seem like a great applicant. =)

Thank you so much Rixs! An encouraging response to a chances thread is a rare occurence on CC! Yes, I am definitley giving the SAT one last shot…I heard that OOS applicants need at least a 1380, so I’ll be doing some intense studying this summer.

I think you have a great shot. But you probably want to improve on the SAT. I’m applying ED too. Hopefully we both get in. :)

There’s no “minimum” on the SAT/ACT, but try to get the highest you can. However, it’s only one thing. You’re a good applicant.

I can’t see them saying “Oh, reject her! She doesn’t have more than a 1380!”

But, it never hurts to see if you can inch up your score. The stronger you are on everything, the more likely you are to be admitted.

But don’t be devastated if you don’t get more than a 1380! That would be silly.

And by the way, you’ve already increased your chance a little bit (just a little) by choosing to apply ED. =)

Thanks hillbryd305! Good luck, I hope so too!

Ok, thanks Rixs! Yes, I’m going to do everything I can to get over 700 in reading and writing. Math is a bit of a lost cause:)

And Rixs, is it true that the more competitive applicants apply ED, so admission can be even harder? I think I heard that somewhere, but I’m not sure.

I’d say you have a great chance of ED…and worst case scenario, deferred RD acceptance.

and just for a morale boost and even though all profiles are different- I had a much lower math score than CR/W score (690 CR/610 M/710 W)…and it didn’t hurt my application!

Make sure you do the optional essay- art is a gift that comes with creativity, so that should be no problem for you!

best of luck!

Many of the most competitive applicants are apt to apply RD because they’re applying to multiple top schools, and W&M is on a list of many.

ED is only for those who are absolutely sure they want to go to W&M.

So while there will definitely be competitive applicants applying ED, I doubt the majority of the most competitive will be.

Glad to hear W&M is your top choice. Remember that W&M considers your best standardized test so we’ll combine your best math score and your best critical reading score into your best composite. If you take the ACT we’ll look at whichever composite is the highest. If you plan to try either test again make sure it’s a Sept. ACT and an Oct. SAT. Those scores tend to make it to us in time to be considered for ED although we cannot guarantee that Oct. SATs always make it in time.

Another thing to consider is a [fine arts submission](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/applicationprocess/artssubmissions/index.php) given your focus in that area. You submit samples of your work to W&M faculty who review it and then provide us with their assessment to be included in your file. Just as we look to our coaches to tell us who the best athletes are we look to our faculty to tell us who the best artists are.

Thank you SkeeteRX8, Rixs, and W&M Admission! You have been very helpful!

Thank you SkeeteRX8- yeah, SAT math is just not one of my strengths.
W&M admission- yes, I will most definitley be submitting a fine arts supplement. Yes, I plan to take the October SAT, hopefully my scores will improve and I can send them with my application. W&M Admission, about how many people submit fine arts supplements?

Hard to say, we don’t really track that but likely approx. 200 people or so per year make a fine arts submission. Maybe more.
