Chances at Wes

<p>I really love everything I've seen and heard about Wesleyan, but i'm slightly unsure about getting in.</p>

<p>white female,rising senior, michigan, Seaholm High School</p>

<p>GPA: a little over 4.0 Weighted, 3.75 unweighted
SAT: 1970 ( 730 reading, 630 math, 610 writing), took it again in June, 2030 superscored</p>

<p>Unfortunately no APs until next year, AP calc and AP environmental science. 3 years of Chinese. Mostly just honors classes right now including a really great program called Flex which is basically a block of social studies and english done in a very different way. Much less "teaching for the test," and lots of open dialogue and non-textbook reading. Kinda reminds me of what i think Wesleyan would be like.</p>

<p>ECs: Chamber Orchestra, Oakland Youth Orchestra, Tennis, Head of Community service and outreach for Green Club (environmental awareness club), Birmingham Voice (an organization that fights racism within the Birmingham community), International Club, Welcome Wagon.
-National Honors Society
-participation in solo and ensemble and msboa every year
-facilitator of discussion at showing of the film Race To Nowhere
- a little over 50 hours of community service at Birmingham Bloomfield Arts Center and Summer in the City
-Director of Marketing for Seaholm's Holocaust Rememberance Conference
-future participation in Envirothon, a competition combined with a community service project all having to do with Environmental Science.</p>

<p>Awards:
-National School Orchestra Scholarship 2011
-Underclassman of the year, Musical: West Side Story 2010
-Orchestra Outstanding Freshman of the year 2009
-Orchestra Outstanding Sophomore of the year 2010</p>

<p>my passions include music, yoga, the outdoors, and activism.
I also went on a wonderful trip to the Grand Canyon put on by our Experimental Learning Program that included lots of leadership experience.</p>

<p>I am always cautious in advising students on their chances at Wesleyan, as both an alum myself and Dad of a soon to be freshman. However, your SAT scores are a bit lower than we’d like to see. I wonder if you have considered taking the ACT and see how you do on that? My son did much better on ACT than SAT and I think that helped quite a bit. I would also strongly advise you to visit Wesleyan and have an interview on campus. You have a lot of great activities and to be studying Chinese as well for three years on top of this is impressive. Wesleyan looks for “rigorous curriculum” first and foremost and then a very cohesive exposition of your interests, expressed both in your interview and your essays, and validated by your teacher and counselor references, are all very helpful. <p>I have taken the ACT twice, yet I didn’t post the scores because I did better on the SAT and preferred it :confused: I know that it’s is low for Wesleyan’s standards, but I still feel like Wesleyan is a good fit for me, so I definitely plan on taking the SAT again in the fall. I plan on having an interview in two days, actually, and hope that I can get across all the reasons I think Wesleyan would be great to attend. Thanks for the reply!</p>

<p>As an incoming freshman for the fall semester I can give you my input based on my application:
Your objectives are very similar to mine (SAT single sitting was 2040 though). My unweighted GPA was about a 3.7 and I took the IB Diploma Programme (HLs were Econ, Physics, Film and SLs were Math, English and Spanish). Having said that, SAT is leaning towards the low side of the middle percentile so try to bump it up to at least ~2050/2100 to be safe. The adcoms at Wes take into account the rigor of your courseload so I think given that you’re taking honors and APs your GPA suits you fine (again you should still try to bump that up).</p>

<p>Speaking of subjectives, I probably think I got in because of my active involvement in my school’s community service programme. I had a focused passion on Baseball (I play in my country’s professional league and have represented my country numerous times) AND I had a unique EC which was b-boying (helped start an unofficial club at my school which performed numerous times). I think Wes values applicants who have a range of interests. Hope this helped out! Good luck =)</p>
