I'm currently a junior and interested to applying to Wesleyan for Economics. (My high school's probably one of the top high schools in California has a good reputation but the stats speak otherwise, with SAT average of 1100 and GPA of 3.2)

So anyways, here are the statistics:
- My GPA's probably going to be around 3.80 to 3.90 unweighted (depending on my probable grades this year), and about 4.0 to 4.1 weighted.
- SAT score's are about 1500 (around 2250/2400 on new SAT) and 750-800 for SAT ii's.
- EC's: I have about 4 solid EC's with long-term commitment, a few solid awards (NMS Commended, Honor Roll, Debate Excellence Award), internships with banks, ~500 hours of community service, and there's another EC which I believe is my strong point, explained in the next subpoint.
- Started an organization (internationally recognized) which helps needy children in my homeland. The organization's helped ~50-100 needy kids with college scholarships, #4, 10, 11 biggest cities in the country helped, 5 colleges and high schools helped. I started the non-profit organization by myself, and many have recognized it. (It takes up about 20-25 hours/week and occassional trips to the country since there's about 10 part-time employees in the organization)

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You sound like you have an excellent shot at Wes. Their econ department is supposed to be one of the best in the country. Especially, if you do ED, I think you've got much better than even odds.

My D went there and loved it. If you have any specific questions, i'll do my best to answer them.

Could you tell me what your D's statistics were, b/c I'm interested in knowing what the GPA/SAT score/EC's are looking like for an accepted Wesleyan student. Thanks for the help!

My sister goes there. She had a 1430, 3.8 uw in tough classes/ top 10%, SAT II scores in the mid 700s, a strong devotion to theatre, and she got in ED.

For Wesleyan, you should have a 1400+, SAT II scores in the 700s, good activites, a lot of personality in your application, and be in the top 10% of your class.

Good luck! Wesleyan has an INCREDIBLE econ department. In fact, a recent study named it the second-best econ department of an LAC (Wellesley was first).

D's stats: I don't have her permission to be too specific, and she got in as a transfer, but basically, she had a high 1400's SAT, and 4.0 UW HS and at her first college. Average ECs at HS, more leadership her freshman year of college. I think they took her partly on the basis of a really great essay.

My D is also applying. Not quite at the level described above (1350 SAT, High 650-675's in SAT 2s, & top 15% of class) but she is a recruited athlete with great other ECs and very good essays(IMHO.) We know the athletics will only go so far; it is obviously a reach, and we will see if she gets in.

Here is my question for Wes parents or Wes students/alumni: How would you describe typical social life on campus, type of people, best aspects, wost aspects, etc?

My D visited overnight, but did not "click" with host & atmosphere (she was there on a Sun nite and I think everyone was working.) I have several friends who attended Wes and LOVED it there. I would love a little feedback (honest feedback!)

SBMom--social life at Wes seemed to revolve around small group get-togethers for my D, but since she wasn't there as a Frosh, I'm speaking of other years. She llived in on campus apartments two years, and then a campus house senior year, and socializing seemed to be in these the most. There are some big campus parties, but not that prevalent. There are a couple frats, but they don't seemed connected to the dominant campus culture. There are a zillion art things each weekend (so many of the kids are in theater, film, music, etc. and the rest show up to support their pals.) There is drinking, as everywhere, but in my D's experience it was much different from that party-school drink till you puke atmosphere which she hated at her first school. More like the sit around the kitchen table with friends type.

Kids there do seem to run to the zany-quirky types, but not in overbearing ways. Differences are very accepted. Goofiness and silliness seemed to be prized attributes.

They're all serious students, though, and most take their academics very seriously.

Social life: Movies. We watch lots and lots of movies. Probably because everyone either is, secretly wants to be, or is dating a film major. Hmm, like Garland said, small get togethers really dominate here. I had a bad-80's music dance party in my room last week (well, probably less of a party, more of a study/stress relief break that turned into a party). My neighbors modify nerf guns for fun. Most of the girls I know are into knitting circles called "stitch and bitch." I spend a lot of time drinking cheap orange soda I can buy for two dollars a case. I'd explain why, but it'd make no sense. We like sledding a lot, yeah, sledding and concerts. I don't know, but really, don't let your daughter base a decision off of one negative prefrosh night on a Sunday. I had a pretty lame prefrosh stayover that turned me off Wesleyan, too. But I'd say I'm having a decent time as it is now.

don't let scores discourage you guys...My sister got into Wes 4 years ago on a 28 act and 1220 SAT I, with mediocre SAT IIs.....but she had a killer essay and recs.......i think her interview was also really good, and she and i are both from Louisiana, so maybe that had something to do with it......but still, don't let scores discourage you from applying!
