chances at west coast schools?

I'm a junior and just wanted to get a rough idea of my chances for next year. I got all of my official info today (GPA, class rank) so I made a new post.

Senior year classes: AP English, Honors FST, AP Euro, Phyc (taking AP test), Econ (maybe taking AP test), and another class open that I haven't decided on yet.

Pretty Good ECs. Shows commitment and leadership.
President/leader of 2 clubs (member for 3 years in one and 2 years in another)
Senior Leader of varsity team (on varsity 4 years) Intramurals for the same sport. Very committed
Spanish Honor Society
Student council (4 years)
I worked with the marketing director and office manager of a marketing/design company as an intern last summer and will be doing the same at a different company (or possibly the same company) this summer.
I have my own business doing similar work as company.
Steady job for 2+ years doing office/case work for lawyers in my city

My GPA is 3.447 (able to improve to 3.6-3.7 by end of this year) and I have a huge upward trend.
UC GPA is 4.15
Ranked in the Top 20% (80/365)

SAT: okay on PSAT but not taking
ACT: scored a 25 with no studying so aiming for a 28+ in june. (Judge chances by the 28)

Will I get in at:
Loyola Marymount
U San Diego
UCSD (OOS)
and USC

If you want to recommend any other schools feel free to do so.

jdlex:

UCSD: Match (out of state)

USC is a reach, even with the 28 ACT and 3.7 GPA.

USD you should be fine. I don't know enough about Loyola Marymount to make a decision.

Thank you.. yeah i figured USC would be a reach but it's good to hear i'm okay at UCSD and USD. Anyone know anything about Loyola Marymount?

UCSD will be a slight reach
Loyola marymount is a saftey.

lmu: safety
usd: match
sd: slight reach
usc: reach/slight reach

That seems about right vgurl008, that's what I thought. Do other people feel the same way?

About USD and LMU, you should get in, so i would consider them safety or at worst low match (so dont worry bout those)

UCSD and USC are reach/slight reach, but I can definately see it happening

btw, r u out of state or in state? cuz for USC and UCSD it will all depend on different things.

the in state/out of state thing would matter for ucsd, not as much for usc.

UCSD: slight reach (oos)
USC: reach / slight reach

I am OOS I know it matters for UCSD but not USC. I will be submitting the Part 1 App. for USC next year to show that I am very interested, try to get an interview, and let them know that they are my first choice. I think I'm applying EA for USD to get a response back early and will be applying in nov. (at the latest) for LMU's rolling admission so I can get a quick response back. I will prob be taking the ACTs again in May and in June so I will have everything all set for apps.

sorry to go off topic,

but if a 3.7 GPA is a reach for what USC usually accepts, then what kind of GPA and SAT/ACT scores would one have to possess to have a decent chance at getting into USC?

USC posts on their website median GPA for admitted students 2006-07 was 3.8 unweighted. I have seen a link to another place on their site suggesting median SAT is 2100.

USC has an average of 4.0W (However they don't weight honors courses, just AP/IB).

As for SAT's somewhere in the 2000 range.

Class of 2010 Freshman profile: http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/docs/admission/Freshman_Profile_2006.pdf

Also check out this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=259774

Keep in mind that those numbers are somewhat skewed by the large number of merit scholarship recipients at the school.

signitinblack: Glancing through your past posts, it seems that you are planning to apply for film, which is a whole different animal for USC. Acceptance rate of ~5%. So stats would need to be significantly higher to have a realistic shot at admission to the film school.

sfgiants: Eh, I don't want to hijack the thread, but.. I'm considering another major, and possibly taking Film in grad school. Thanks for all the information. (Did you get accepted at USC?)

No problem. And yes, I'm a freshman at 'SC.

sfgiants, what do you mean by the numbers are skewed by the merit scholars?

Well the really high stats of the merit scholarships recipients push the averages slightly higher than what would really be necessary for admission.

yeah i found it wierd that a 3.7 is a 'reach' gpa because most people tell me that is pretty good for USC as long as your test scores are okay. Also, i think i have pretty good ecs I have a lot more that I didn't list.
