Hi.
I’m currently a junior applying from out of state. My GPA is a 3.86 unweighted and 4.02 weighted. By the end of this year, it should be bumped up to about a 3.9 and 4.13 respectively. I took the ACT and received a 33 composite. My SAT is:
720 math
670 critical reading
690 writing
2080 combined.
I took 2 APs this year: Biology and US History. Next year, I am taking AP Psychology and AP Calculus
I just took subject tests for Biology and Math 2, but I have not yet received my scores.
Top 10% of my class
Extra-curriculars:
I created the science club at my school, 4 years of band and section leader, 4 years of pep band, 4 years Students Against Destructive Decisions, 4 years of Best Buddies, a job, National Honors Society, 2 season of novice crew and a season of varsity crew, and I work for the athletic director at my school.
2 years of a leadership program at my school in which upperclassmen help incoming freshmen get acclimated to the school.
I will have 100+ hours of community service by the time I submit applications.
I am also looking at University of Michigan, University of Virginia, Tulane, and the UC schools (primarily Berkeley and San Diego)
Thanks for any help you can provide
Applying to state schools from out of state is a very risky move. You could easily get shut out and if you need financial aid, that will be tough.
UVA, W&M and Berkeley I would say are remote.
Do you need financial aid?
@BatesParent2019 I’m not sure how important financial aid is in my own situation beside the fact that it would be nice, of course. Although, I have visited all of the schools that I am considering applying to and none of them raised any concerns about receiving financial aid as an out-of-state student.
Also, I understand why UVA and especially Berkeley would be very difficult to get into. However, I’m not sure that I understand why you would consider W&M remote. Would you mind elaborating because I looked extensively into the criteria that they use to evaluate their applicants and I think I fit in well with the out-of-state admits?
I think William and Mary is a match. Michigan a low reach along with UVa. Don’t know anything about USD or Tulane sorry. Berkeley is probably your biggest reach right now but with good essays it could possibly be attainable I think. Good luck!

Virginia schools are required by law to limit out of state students to around 30% plus I would imagine they get many applications from Massachusetts. Only 52% of applicants including VA residents received any financial aid with an average award of 17k. OOS cost of attendance is about 55k. You can bet that 52% did not include many OOS applicants.
You have good stats but its too risky both from a financial and acceptance standpoint.
I am just saying don’t be overly reliant on OOS schools.
@BatesParent2019 well thanks for your input. I respectfully disagree with you because I feel like you’re too focused on the financials with no knowledge of my financial situation and considering that I am not choosing my school right now, just where I am going to apply. I don’t have an issue with the financials and my parents have yet to raise any concerns either. Not to mention that there isn’t a single school in MA that I would even consider going to, so we’ll see I guess.
Actually, I am more concerned about the acceptance risk. These schools are highly selective plus you are OOS. This forum is filled with these stories every spring, many cases better stats than yours.
You should consider some private schools with the stats you have. The risk/reward is better.
You are in the middle 50% in SAT for W&M so for out of state that is a big gamble. Think about it. 30% max for out of state, 49 other states, lots of Massachusetts applicants. Only a 1 in 3 chance overall, which includes 70% VA residents.
I think you have a good shot given your unweighted GPA and your ACT score, which I recommend sending over your SAT score. Your EC’s also show consistency and leadership involvement within your school community. What are you interested in studying?
You asked specifically about William & Mary in your title, so I am glad to be able of be of help there. I am a current student at William & Mary and can try to answer any questions you might have. I also applied as an out of state student from a similar area so I understand where you are coming from
