Chances at William and Mary

I live in Virginia, 25 minutes away from William and Mary, but my stats are lower than their average. Please let me know if you think I have a shot.

I want to be a History major.

I know my stats are less than average, but do any of you think I have a chance?

i think your chances are pretty good. You've got great SAT's and you've taken tough courses. Plus ur in state. I'm just wondering if you have a weighted gpa, cuz u got quite a few ap's. One more thing... Where do u live?
I live right in williamsburg

I actually don't know, I think it's unweighted because I got A's in my AP classes. Oh, I live in York County.

What school in York County?

Tabb High School. Okay, I don't if I should apply early decision or not. I don't think I have a lot of competition from my school, they all want to go to UVA, but I don't want the risk of getting rejected ED and not being deferred at all. Since my 1st semester ends after the RD deadline, they won't really see my mid-year grades well after the deadline, so the only issue is that I don't want to be ouright rejected in December. What should I do?

I used to go to Tabb Middle and I have friends that go to THS.
I'm applying to WM too, and I'm having the same dilemma as you.

that's amazing if u got a's on all ap's(at least in my eyes). If you go ed, i doubt you'll get outright rejected by the school. If anything you'll be deferred to regular. Write good essays, and I'm sure that u'd get in. I'm applying ed too, so i hope to see u there!

being instate with your SAT scores will make you very very competitive. I'd be surprised if you didn't get in.

I don't what my essay topic should be. I want to write about an ethical dilemma and how it helped shape my philosophical views on life, but I don't want the Admissions office to think I'm crazy. My views aren't radical, but more about the choices we make and its effect on us down the road.

Are you suppose to write two essays? I noticed that there's one on the common application and another one on the William and Mary supplement. Should I do both?

The supplement essay is optional - it's designed for those who couldn't get all they wanted out on the Common App.

Due to your grades and rank, you have a very small chance of getting in. Ditto for UVA. Since VA's other public schools suck, I'd shop that SAT score around at schools like Wake Forest, GW and Boston College, or perhaps some of the nation's better public schools, like Wisconsin and Georgia.

your grades are on the low side, which will hurt you more at UVA than WM (I still firmly believe this). I think you have a chance though. Write your essays about something that means something to you.

cavalier, be nice, lol... JMU and Tech would function as a flagship state school in a lot of other states. =P

My point, soccerguy, was that the OP could do better, considering that she likely will not get into UVA or W&M.

You will never know until you try. Numbers are important and an applicant must be in the ballpark, but an applicant is more than just numbers. That said, here are some recent numbers for W&M.

According to NCES, acceptance rate for all women in 05/06 was 25.7%. This includes in-state and out-of-state applicants. Here's the link:

<a href="http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cool/screen.aspx?screenId=10%5B/url%5D">http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cool/screen.aspx?screenId=10</a></p>

The Common Dataset (CDS) for 05/06 as posted on the W&M site (<a href="http://www.wm.edu/ir/part_c.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.wm.edu/ir/part_c.htm</a>) provides the following numbers:

The 25/75 SAT numbers were Verbal: 630/730; Math: 630/710.
75% of applicants had a 3.75 or over.
18% of applicants had a 3.50 to 3.74.

Also, the CDS contains a chart that lists and weighs the importance of various factors. The weighing options are Most Important, Important, Considered, and Not Considered. W&M lists only two factors as Most Important: Rigor of secondary school record; and State Residency.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Thanks, phorid!

Further evidence for the uphill climb the OP will face, considering her stats and status as a white female...

if the op writes a good essay, i'm sure she could get in

It would be incorrect to say that the other Virginia public schools suck...............I'm personally not a big fan of JMU but it is a very good school and Tech is a great public school, very well known with a good reputation. Mary Washington is an excellent Virginia public. In fact, Virginia is pretty much known for it's good choices for public colleges. That said, her GPA is low for William and Mary, not sure if she even asked about UVA...........her SAT scores are very good, it would depend on her essays and the competition from her high school. I think William and Mary is a reach because of her GPA but it could work out for her. Good Luck!

pedsox, don't confuse Virginia with California...
