Chances At Williams College

I applied Early Decision and am wondering how much of a shot I have...

GPA: (unweighted) 3.64
ACT: 30

Senior Schedule:
Physics
AP Bio
AP English
Stat
AP French
Virtual High School Pre-vet
Auditioned Choir and Band

Over my high school career I have taken 5 lab science courses - Physics, Anatomy, Biology Honors, AP Biology, and Chemistry. I am hoping to major in Environmental Science.

E/C's:

Vocal/Theatrical: I have been in the District choir since 7th grade. I got the top score in the district last year. I have been in the All-State Chorus since Sophomore year, and have an All-Eastern Chorus Recommendation (I will find out if I got in or not this month). I have been taking private voice lessons and vocal coaching for five years.

I have been in the auditioned: Assabet Valley Mastersingers, New England Conservatory Youth Chorale, Madrigal Singers, a Jazz singing group, etc. I am also the leader of a student-run A Cappella group.

I have been in these shows: My Fair Lady, Urinetown, Once Upon A Mattress, Bye Bye Birdie, Aladdin.

Instrumental: I play Baritone Saxophone in Community Band, Clarinet in Marching Band (I am section leader), and French Horn in the auditioned school Symphonic Band.

Athletic: I did track for the first time last year, and qualified for districts in both high jump and pole vault. I had little to no training and got 5'00" in high jump, placing second at leagues. I pole vaulted a little towards the end of the season, and got 8'6" at my second meet, which was the last meet of the season. I have emailed and called the coach at Williams but unfortunately have not heard back.

I have also been a horseback rider for the past seven years and have done a few shows. I received reserve champion at AHAM but otherwise have only done smaller-scale shows.

Honors: National Beta Club (Vice President), National French Honors Society, Tri-M Music Society (Concert Manager).

I did Early Decision, have great recommendations from AP English Teacher, Anatomy Teacher, and Voice Teacher. I sent in a supplemental CD of my singing, have visited the campus, and have met with the choir director.

Thank you!

I think your greatest strength on your application will be all your physical science classes–Williams has an amazing undergraduate science program. Something crazy like 80% of applicants to medical school leaving Williams are accepted, and it has the largest undergraduate summer science research program in the nation. Your GPA and ACT scores are fine–not the best, but definitely within range.

Unless you got 5’s on ten AP tests, have a 4.7 GPA and got perfect SAT’s, the most important thing about getting into a school like Williams is getting within the range of their accepted students and then setting yourself apart from everyone else. Obviously you already submitted your app, so there’s not much to do now, but just bear that in mind. Your musical involvement is really good, and submitting a vocal supplement was a great idea, as was meeting with Brad.

Best of luck!

I forgot to mention that I’m from MA - I heard that’s a killer! :(

I think your gpa/scores are okay for Williams, not stellar. I don’t think it matters how many science courses you took; the important thing is a rigorous curriculum. You can take the science courses you need while you are there (this tidbit courtesy of my son’s GC at a MA boarding school so they know what they are talking about). I would try a bit harder to pursue the track/field route as it can def help with admissions if they decide they want you on the team.

Looking at Naviance for my son’s school, the admitted GPA and test scores are very low
(3.18 average GPA). Most kids were denied and I am assuming these admits were recruited/slotted athletes.

I got an email back from the coach with all the “recruitable heights/times” for athletes. The high jump recruitable height was 5’00", which I have gotten! How do I know if he is interested/if I’m being recruited? He didn’t send an email in which he himself was saying anything to me specifically, just the email with the recruit heights and info about the team. Thank you!

I suggest you post on the athletic recruiting forum. [Athletic Recruits - College Confidential](Athletic Recruits - College Confidential Forums)
There is a lot of good information on NESCAC recruiting that you can read. You are getting a late start but being a recruit can help with admissions. Good luck!
