chances at yale, harvard, princeton, ect.?

hey! so im applying to

-yale (deferred)
-harvard
-princeton
-stanford
-brown
-cornell
-penn
-washu
-vanderbilt
-duke
-rice
-northwestern

yeah i know alot, but chances are i wont get into most of them and i havent gotten to visit any except 2, so i need options once i get in places.

i applied for engineering at all of them.

what do you think my chances are??

GPA 7.8/8 or a 4.3/4 (weighted) my school has a wierd gpa scale. a 96 is not an A+ but a 85 is a B+....so i think its really unfair cuz ive gotten alot of 96's but they only show up as As on my transcript grr

No grade below an A on entire transcript (almost all honors/ap, except when not offered)

Only 2 other students have made straight A?s at my school (one got in early to yale)

Top 5% of class

My school does not rank, but i think for the top 10 they will tell the school (and im 4th i think)

Other Random Facts:

o My family is relatively low income and both of my parents work (this has been restricting in the extra-curricular activity area because I have had to watch my brother after school most days).

o Not a whole lot of community service, but some.

o Member of the Young Democrats. did volunteer work for local campaigns. Politics is one of my passions.

o No job experience, but frequent babysitter.

My letters of recommendation will be very good, especially from my physics teacher (im the first person in the history of his honors physics class to get above a 100 average--and this is a tough class). all my teachers love me and will write good recs.

one essay about the 60s and how i admire it and it reflects alot about me..kinda interesting.
one essay about why i wanna do bioengineering
one is about being a british citizen and living abroad and how its affect my perspective ect.
(these essays vary by school)

sooooo what do ya think? think i have a shot? thanks!

and yes i know my extra currics are weak, but im hoping the fact that im not rich and have had to babysit basically everyday after school will make up for that.

reject from HYPSBP, accept/waitlist at the rest

I like ur profile.. but I can't really say ur chances.. for me are perfect!..

Tough to say, you may get into all or none of them. Do you have any real safeties?

for my school, vandy and wash u are safeties. kinda northwestern too. just based on typical stats of those who get accepted from my school.

Do you have permanent residency or dual citizenship? If you don't and apply for financial aid, your chances will be lowered at every school except Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.

oh yeah im a dual citizen. ive lived most of my life in texas, i lived in the UK for 3 years from 4th-6th grade.

anyone else?

I would apply to one more safety with a higher acceptance rate (ie. Michigan).

She doesn't need more safties. Remember there are still relatively fewer female applicants to engineering programs. Michigan's engineering programs actually have better reputations than lots of schools on the list (for example, Brown.)

yeah. i really dont think i need any more safeties :/
with a 2300 and a 4.0 uw? am i being too confident about this?

i like your profile. where are you from, as geography quotas help.

sorry, i just realized texas....my bad. anyway i think you have good shot, at least one school that you apply to

I think it comes down to your essays and if they are as good as you say they are. Your greatest weakness in your app is the extra curricular portion and that is a section that allows admissions to see waht type of person you are, did you give back to your community, did you pursue something (i.e. an internship) that was relative to the major you wanted to take. Since those are all school related, your essays will really have to make up for it. And yes, i believe you should have applied to some safeties. At top 15 schools, no school is a safety, especially when half your list is comprised of the Ivy League schools. I also believe you will get into at least one of those 15 schools, but it would have been much smarter to apply to one of the lower schools liek UCLA or U Mich or Tufts, a school that has your major but still has national prestige instead of gunning for the top name.

texas is overrepresented, so that works against me, right?

ughh, i'd actually appreciate your school's grading system....for mine, a 97 is an A+ and an 87 is a B+....which really blows....

anyway, i think you've got a 20% shot at HYPS, which is better than the avg applicant....higher shots for the others

piping-do you differentiate between A- and A and A+, or just have A and A+?? at my school a 89.5 counts EXACTLY the same as a 96.4. GAY

yeah i hate our system. i wish it just showed averages (numbers)

does anyone wanna read my essays?

i'll read your essay

for us 89.5 to 91.4 = A-
91.5 to 96.4 = A
96.5+ = A+
