Chances at . . .

Hey everyone! I'm seriously rethinking my college list right now, and I'd appreciate any input :) Here's my story:

South Asian Male
Rank 1 or 2/240 ranked, 400 total kids i think. high school in suburbs of NYC (though not competitive at all- we have really poor performance)
SAT: 2250 (720M,760CR,770W) - should I retake, especially since most schools arent considering writing and since math is supposed to be my forte? it's retarded that 2 wrong and an omit is 720 :(
SATII: 730 bio, 750 ush, 660 chem. possibly taking another, maybe math II
ACT: took in october, but i went in completely blind- i'm hoping i at least broke 30 :p
GPA: 100. something, I dunno. I got a B in US history. stupid american pageant.
Toughest courseload, except I couldn't take language cause of sched. conflicts. My GC is writing that in the rec. Also, 8 APs by graduation (5s on world hist, bio, us hist, 3 on eng lang, 4 on chem, currently taking lit, physics, bc calc) with 2 dual enrollment classes (economics + psychology through syracuse univ)

ECs:
science olympiad captain 12, member 10-12
academic league captain 12, member 10-12
model congress vice pres 12, member 9-12
NHS VP 12, 11-12
math league 11-12
math HS treasurer 12, 9-12
music (trumpet) since 4th grade, all districts/county orchestras, no all state
Founder/member of islamic center youth group since 8th

research (submitted to westinghouse, didn't make semis, but might have a chance with the other comps). i just submitted to american academy of neuroscience, but I dont find out about that til' january.

other stuff:
teacher recs should be nice, both teachers i've asked are more like really good friends than teachers.
rockefeller summer science outreach program last summer.. it's supposed to be fairly competitive.. 1/5 accepted or something, not sure

awards:
none! .. or barely any:
NM Commended
AP Scholar w/ Distinction
First place math league for county, made states but didnt go cause of school musical (don't regret it at all, we did aida.. i was in the pit)
community scholarship winner
possibly some research awards, but I dunno yet. I was sort of disappointed that I didn't make semis in westinghouse, but then I realized the projects that win are amazing

oh yeah, edit: i know it doesn't seem like my ecs are too focused, mainly since i like a lot of stuff. i'm in a few other things, but to sum it up, i like science and math (surprise surprise) and writing. in model congress, i've always been in science committees at conferences, and when I have a science column at the school newspaper.

ok, that was really long. Anyway, here are the colleges I'm looking into:

Brown (will apply for PLME, but I'd really like to go even if I'm not accepted)
Columbia (brother went here, dad does research = tuition benefits, we have connections, etc.)
Duke
Yale
Johns Hopkins
U Mich
Princeton
Tufts
SUNY Binghamton

I'm looking to go into bio, possibly research or even med school after college. I'd like a school with a nice music program--somewhere that I'll be able to play even though I'm only decent. perhaps getting lessons for credit or something :). Does anyone know of any schools that have nice architecture (gothic-y, like Yale), are relatively close to NY, and are strong in science? and, what do you think of my chances at the above schools? too top heavy? thanks for reading this and thanks for any input!

73 views and no replies :(

i have to do laundry .. bump :)

Brown Slight reach
Columbia if you didnt have connections i'd say Reach, not sure otherwise
Duke Slight reach/Match
Yale Reach
Johns Hopkins Match/Maybe slight reach
U Mich Match
Princeton Reach
Tufts Match
SUNY Binghamton Safety

thanks a lot for the input rockofeller- im going to bump this once more, I was just curious if anyone had any other schools to suggest (not really into LACs, see above for more details- thanks ) :)

crapshoot for yale and princeton

thanks again, I just want to bump this and ask if anyone knows any other schools (like i mentioned above)

...bump! :p

you say you went in to the ACT blind? literally?
the first time i took the ACT i was doing well, then i had a migraine that blinded me for the last 2 sections, so my scores all together were pretty inconsistent!

im actually not kidding, though

hahah, nice. err yeah, you can ignore that part about the ACT anyway, i shouldn't have gone in blind to the test - got a 30, mainly because i didn't finish reading/science. I plan on sending my SATs

bump. also, i was thinking of retaking my SAT I--it doesn't add up that I'm really into math/sci but my CR and Writing scores (760/770 respectively) are a lot higher than my math (720). should i retake and go for a higher score? i missed two and omitted one, and one more question right is usually 20-30 points higher. i'm pretty sure I can at least get one more right, if not all of them.

this forum is competitive! :)

take the Math IIC, get a 750+ on it, and that'll show that you are strong in math (its harder than the SATI Math section, which is supposedly the old Math IC)

oook, i didn't take the december SAT II (bad move, I know- I was just too tired). I'm gonna take the ones in January, and I'm pretty confident from practice tests that I can get 750+. That being said, I am also pretty confident that I can get 750+ on my SAT I Math, probably even higher. Which is more important? I've already taken the SAT I twice, if that matters.
