Chances, auditions, etc

First, let me say how AMAZING this website is & how awesome everyone is for being willing to help each other out!
I’m so glad I’ve this place.
Anyways, hey y’all- I’m Chrissy. :)

This is my first thread, so I kinda have a lot to ask/say. The main thing I’d like to know is if I really have a chance of getting in with absolutely no community service hours or honors classes. As encouraging as everyone is, I feel smaller and smaller compared to all other applicants as I read about their school achievements…and Sophomores/Juniors, I envy you for focusing on college now! Keep it up!

So here’s some information about me.
GPA: 3.5 (working harddd to keep it)
ACT: 21 (without writing- I just took another with writing today & have to wait for the results)

Jubilee Sounds Choir 4 years
Drama Club 4 years - major role Junior year
First Priority Bible Club 4 years - Vice President Junior year
French Club 4 years
Church Youth Group 4 years - worship singer/leader

Eastern Shore Chorale Society Competition - 1st place
($250 scholarship towards voice lessons)

I’ve been working since I was 14…which is why I haven’t spent a whole lot of time in activities besides Choir & Drama. I take pride in being responsible with a job & everything, but unfortunately, that means nothing to colleges. :/

I’ve been singing my whole life. Making it to Hollywood as a singer used to be my dream, but after auditioning for American Idol, I had a change of heart- and it was Broadway. I’ve been in many talent shows/competitions & a number of plays over the years. I even was part of an adult theater musical (Godspell) with an actor who had been on Broadway before…but he screwed us over a few days before our performace, so we never got to do the show after weeks & weeks of practicing. Ehh, you can tell I talk a lot…I can’t help it.

Do any of you have a Drama/Choir teacher who doesn’t care to help you prepare for your audition or college? That’s the situation I’m in. I have to have 2 contrasting monologues & 2 songs ready by February, as y’all know already…but no one to critique/help me! I mean, I wouldn’t mind doing it myself, but with a school as amazing as Tisch, I need someone to really guide me…and it’s not like dramatic directors are nearly as easy to find as voice instructors.

If you were accepted to Tisch for musical theater, what monologues & songs did you do? Just curious.
Do you think something as recent as WICKED would be a bad idea?

AM I THE ONLY REGULAR DECISION FRESHMAN WHO HASN’T APPLIED YET?

Hmm, that’s all I can think of…but I’m probably going to be on here a lot now.
Thanks for taking the time to read this! <3

Chrissy, I'm sorry I don't have a lot of time right this minute but just wanted to say three things.

1- Welcome!

2- Wicked is a bad idea.

3- Schedule your audition NOW if you haven't already done so! They book up extremely fast and I know someone mentioned a couple of days ago that the 'pickings were slim' already.

I'm sure some others will chime in with more specific audition materials info for you. :)

I'm applying to Tisch as a transfer, so my situation is a bit different from yours. Though I'm in the contingent of people who don't think they're gonna get into Tisch academically, let alone artistically.

I would not say that colleges don't care about you having a job. NYU specifically asks on the application what jobs you've held (unless I'm not remembering the application correctly). So the fact that you're working, doing well in school and participating in clubs is great! Plus you only have a few activities, but you've been in them for your entire high school, plus you've held an office in one. I think you hold a decent chance because you're well-rounded, perhaps you should try taking the SAT as well just to see what score you get?

As far as your audition is concerned, I don't think NYU is too concerned over having a do or do not list for their auditions. Are you applying to any other schools? Cause if you are I would recommend looking up other material besides Wicked, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Spelling Bee, and all the other shows that are popular among girls' auditions and on Broadway. You don't want to be comparing yourself to Idina or Sutton unless you truly are the next Idina or Sutton. Whether YOU think you are or not doesn't matter, you'll never know if the auditioners consider you that or not, so why risk that comparison?

Do you have a voice teacher? Perhaps he/she can help you find material and help you work on your rep. As far as working on monologues, obviously find something that you connect to (same goes for songs) and that you could believable do now. Perhaps ask one of the directors you've worked with to have you perform your monologues for them and they can give you their opinions. If they're not willing try asking someone from one of your clubs to sit and watch you, another set of eyes and ears can help you even when a "professional" can't.

One of the moms/coachs here can probably give you better answers than I can, but these are just my opinions from one appliciant to another. Good luck!!

Born To Sing --

I don't know where you are planning to audition, but most of the audition spaces have already been booked. Check the artistic review scheduler on the NYU Tisch Drama website ASAP to register for a time.

It's too bad that your teacher is not willing to help you, but other students can't really help you either. Their audition repertoire is probably not right for you. I think you should try to find someone locally who can make appropriate suggestions for you, and then work with you on preparing the material. It might take two different people, but it will be worth it.

Good luck.

Though I've booked an audition date I haven't sent in the application yet ^_^;;

Yeah, same here. My audition is in Atlanta & I'm not even half-way finished with my app...I plan on finishing it this weekend. Thanks for replying! <3

I understand about not having time to reply a lot...I appreciate you replying with your thoughts! Oh, I wasn't planning on doing Wicked- I just meant something as new...like Avenue Q or Hairspray. I don't think Wicked would be good for an audition, either. I scheduled my audition before I posted. It's in Atlanta! I'm so excited! And you're right- they went fassst, I got the second to last one! Please write back more when you can. Thanks! :)

I didn't even think about that with the job part...I guess it is important to them, which I'm really glad about b/c I've never had time to get 20 thousand hours of service, lol - And yeah, I totally agree about the judges & knowing if I'm the next Idina or not...very good point. :) I have a choir director, but she doesn't have the time to help me...as far as a voice teacher, I was taking lessons from the best of the best, but she passed away. :/ And now the other bests have a major waiting list...so I think I'm just going to have to use my best judgement for my audition stuff & have my Drama friends help me out. I guess that's all I can do, lol - I think I actually already know what I wanna do for one song, but I'm not sure yet...good luck to you, too!!! <3

Yeah, I really don't think other students can be a big help, either, but I have no idea how to find someone locally, like you said. I wouldn't mind different people...I just don't know who/what to look up! My audition is set for Atlanta in February. Thanks for the thoughts! <3

Sweet. Same here. What haven't you finished on your application?

Born to Sing, you might think about going on various college's Musical Theatre dept/major's web sites and looking for "Do Not Use" lists for auditions. Though schools differ in this regard (some have such lists, and others do not), those lists may give you an idea of what is considered OK/desirable to use and what is not. I believe that Cincinnati Conservatory has quite a detailed list up somewhere, and you might start there. Of course, in the end, it is up to you what to sing that shows your ability and personality and acting off to best advantage. Good luck ... we are all rooting for you!

L

Thank you so much- I never even thought about that! You're awesome! :D

its good to hear others havent finished the nyu app. yet. I have to finish 3 more essays. it bugs me ALOT that there are 5 essays to write before you can apply, but i guess they need to weed people out somehow! anyway, im hoping to finish everything by tomorrow night... ive set aside tomorrow to write the last 3. after that i go to the emerson app. and then the lil baby essay for uarts and im finally finished with my apps. 6 down. 3 to go. lets hope im done by mid-next week. but yea..borntosing.. good luck with your audish. and let me know what you end up picking!

Bwaychic, I know what you mean about the essays! That's the only thing holding me back, really...I planned on finishing mine this weekend, but then my dad was talking to me about in-state & out-of-state tuition & made me change my mind about trying to go straight in, and move & stay for a year first to become a resident. But then when I told him about it, he said he didn't see anything at Tisch about that; he was talking about other schools...so now I'm freaking out b/c I really wanted to get it done this weekend, but I have my last semester tests & finals this week- there's NO way I can do those essays before Friday... :( Ughhh, so I guess I'm going to have to look bad & turn it in over the break. Sounds like you're way ahead! 6 down? That's amazing...good luck, too! Do you know what you're auditioning with yet?

Yeah fortunately (or unfortunately, however you wanna look at it) NYU's tuition isn't dependant on whether you're in-state or out of state; it's expensive either way!

I was able to get my NYU application in very early, the day after freshman early decision applications were due. I'm a transfer student so I only had one essay and technically my application isn't due until April 1st but I just wanted to get it over with. I got all my school applications in by the first week of November, so now I just have to worry about transcripts and recommendations, which gives me time to focus on my audition and not stress about the paper work.

They accept freshman regular decision up to January 15th, so if you'll able to get it in soon you'll be more than fine!

BreakIntoSong,

Where are you from in Berks County? My daughter has applied ED to the Musical Theater program at NYU and I am from Reading, PA. Just curious.

BreakIntoSong, I'm so jealous that you've been that responsible- I've just been SO freakin' busy with work & school that I haven't had time to even think about my whole application...I haven't even started applications for other schools! I'm just focused on finishing NYU's b/c it's so big. Yeah, I know I can get it in, hopefully before January; I just can't get myself to sit down & write those essays b/c they're SO important, ya know? Thanks for writing back...& good luck with everything else- I'm sure you're gonna do great! <3

Borntosing: The only reason I had the time, besides the fact that I didn't have to write nearly as many essays as you guys had to, is because I've been out of school for over a year and haven't been able to get a job. I was in a show and the AADA summer intensive over the summer, but other than that I've had lots of time on my hands. Factors that may count against me in the admission decision at NYU. I'm sure you're not the only one who hasn't submitted their application yet, a lot of students are going to use this break to finish up applications and get their other paper work in order. The key is to just not stress, everything works out the way it's supposed to. :)

cindystamps4u: I am from Reading, PA too!! Such a small world! Good luck to your daughter!

Man, that's so helpful to hear...I don't think being out of school & everything is going to count against you- especially if you've got talent. ;) Well, I was gonna be late for school, so now I'm just going to check in second block- & now I'm gonna work on my essays for an hour. MAYBE I can get them done by Friday...if not, I'm not going to stress. Like you said, everything works out the way it's supposed to & I really want my application to be as perfect as it can be. =]

Hey, guys, I'm Taryn and I'm auditioning in February, too! And don't stress too much about the app - I'm a notorious over-achiever, and while I have all my other apps done, the NYU one won't be finished til Christmas.... Anyone auditioning in Chicago?
