<p>It really depends on the university in question. Wharton (business) at UPenn is a hell of a lot harder to get into than any other major there, but i think MIT admits students to the entire university rather than just one school.</p>
<p>Wharton@UPenn is not a "hell of a lot harder" than the other schools anymore, their College and Engineering school acceptance rates have plummeted and the difference is now marginal.
To answer the OP's question, it depends on the university you're applying to and the popularity and size of the school you apply to within it. For individual majors within a school, it doesn't make any difference for most universities: unless say, you have terrible math scores and are applying to be a math/physics major.</p>
