Hello, here are my stats. Can you guys please be honest? Thanks!
UC GPA: 3.73
Unweighted GPA 3.52
ELC: No
AP’s taken: 7 (Biology, US History, English Language, English Literature, Government, Economics, Calculus AB)
Scores for each AP Exam taken: AP Bio (2), AP US History (3), AP English Language (3)
SAT: 500 CR, 540 Math, 610 Writing = 1650
SATII: Biology E (540)
Awards: I won the Algebra 2 award at my school for having the best performance in Algebra 2 during my sophomore year. I was also nominated as the top 5 people in English 10 during my sophomore year as well.
Personal Statement: For the “Describe the world you come from” prompt, I talked about how I was not satisfied with my grades and strived to worked hard for the grades that I would be satisfied. I also talked about how my mother has multiple sclerosis which has inspired me to enter the field of medicine.
For the second prompt “Talk about any talent, personal achievement, etc.” I talked about how I was captain of my basketball team in 8th grade, in which that year we had a winning record (the previous year we didn’t win a game). That showed me that I can help people in general.
If there’s anything else that is needed to know, please let me know. Please be honest. Thanks!

Based on your GPA and SAT (both below average) your chances would be a low reach. If your essays are compelling you may have a chance. You do not list your major which would make some difference. I hope you have applied for some safeties. Good Luck

I applied to the biological sciences major. When you say low reach, what’s the percentage for that?

ItsaBenzThing: If your SAT and/or GPA was above the average, that would compensate for the lower STAT. I can only go by the posted Stats and prior experience since my older Son applied at UCD and is currently attending for Environmental Science. Biology is a competitive major so I give you a 30-40% chance of acceptance. Like I said, if your essays are stellar your chances would increase. You cannot read the minds of the admission officers so you really do not know what they are looking for in the essay. My youngest son has applied this year for Computer Science. His GPA is below average but test scores are above the average. I still give him only a 50-60% chance admissions. I also noticed you applied to UCI. I would also give you the same odds. Sorry and I hope you have some back up schools.

My backup is UCR , which I recently got into. I’ve seen many people with my same stats get into UCI more than UCD but isn’t a 30%-40% chance a fairly good chance? By the way, good luck to your son as well!

When your chancing someone, you can only look at the school STATs and some posting by other CC’s to give your opinion. 30-40% chance is again my opinion, but leaves a 60-70% chance you may not get in. No applicant is 100% sure of admission, even with Stellar grades, essays and test scores. It all depends on the admission officers. Even being accepted, there is no guarantee for success. My personal example is my older son whom is currently attending UCD. Always in the 10% of his high school class and good grades. His weakness is Math. He took AP Calculus and received a B in the class but only a 2 on the AP exam. Took his first Calculus class last quarter at UCD and received a C (never has received this low of a grade) and was devastated. You have to remember for most of the UC’s the majority of the students have at least a 4.0 GPA or greater. That means in college, you are no longer the top, you are the norm and some students will get A’s, some B’s and some C’s… the competition is fierce. So if you are on the lower end of the STAT’s you may have to work twice as hard to achieve your goal.
Thank you for the encouragement for my younger son and he also got into UCR. Good luck.

Well Said GumbyMom

I agree with your 30% chance. OP is a well below average applicant (stats only) for Davis. Other factors may make his/her application successful.

Good luck.

Alright, thank you for all the input! I’m hoping for the best!
