Chances: Berkeley,UCLA

Hi! I’m one of the many Chinese Americans living in California. Like everyone else, I was wondering what my chances were for the top UCs. I know my GPA is low, but I go to a well ranked high school (Foothill) and was wondering if anyone thinks my SAT scores and extracurriculars can override my GPA.
u r such a perfectionist.

Ur not gonna get rejected or deferred.
well actually it's possible, but very very unlikeley.

Ide say ur a match for both of them

Hey thanks for your confidence bigtwix. It's just, i've listened to a lot of my dad's "When i went to Berkeley, the students are way smarter than you are, your not getting in..." kinda stuff.

UCB/UCLA: Match-Slight Reach

You should get into atleast one of the two, if not both, but admissions can be random at the best UC's. Best of luck!

J- You have the scores and the ECs, but GPA could hurt. Probably in at LA or Cal, though maybe not both.

Thx for the advice guy, wow this is a really good forum. I just posted today and already have 3 responses. Thanks for staying active and helping the graduating community guys.

Yea the average UC Gpa for UCLA is 4.13 and for UCB is 4.17, but the average SAT is around 2100, so Id say you have good chances

You had a fairly good shot at getting in. At my school last year, we had a kid with a 3.80 GPA weighted get into UC-Berkeley. He was Chinese, and his only hook was probably being national merit semifinalist and getting 2300+ on his SAT's. However, I think you have a lot of great things there and you should probably get in.

What about chances at UCB/UCLA with those stats, but going for an engineering major?

Just from what i know about Berkeley, business and engineering are the two most competitive schools. So I'd think the comments apply but you might need a slightly higher GPA. Haven't really looked into engineering but i know it is top 3 in undergrad programs, just like Haas is.

My God... a perfect match for Berkeley.

wait
ur dad say's that berkeley was harder when he went there???
i beg to differ.

anyway
we'll see with my brother who's applying to schools this year
including berkeley

but
my gpa is really low for berkekley and ucla, but

for me
i have
3.75 ucgpa
decent ec's
33act oh yeah
sat2's
700,720,710
and

heres the crazy part
If i went to berkley ide be 5th generation (my great great grandfather went there before it was even call berkekly. The school was called the University of California college of engineering)
and
ide be the 12th person in my family to attend
and
My great grandfather was the head of UC board of regents in the 70's
(his name is still recognized by admissions officers and board members)

and
my family has contributed over ide say, like 10 million dollars to the school. (my great grandparents(and great great) made over 250 ships for the US during ww1 and ww2.(the company was passed down through my family until my great grandfather sold it in the early 60's)

PristineDestiny,

Your dad is crazy. You're a match.

Woot thanks guys, let's see if i get in XD. Planning to send top notch essays.

My two cents...you may wish to talk with your music director to see if he/she thinks its appropiate for them to contact UCB/UCLA music directors BEFORE a decision has been made. It might give your application a GREAT BIG STAR on the file-and give you an edge....mind you I have absolutely NO IDEA if it will work, but it might help---Good Luck!

PristineDestiny:

UCB/UCLA: Match
