Generally, what are my chances of getting in if the only thing I can contribute is ~5-6 thousand dollars from my family's income? Single parent/three children family, poor country (serbia), mother lawyer, father unemployed. I'd give more if I had more, ofc. :D

I mean, would it be like:

1) SRY NO. No fin aid available, hence no admission for you, boy.

or

2) We'd like to admit you, BUT not with fin aid.

If it was the latter, meaning they'd still give me a place but only if I miraculously got the money (like taking a loan from suspicious sources, nvm), I'd still have a shot.

Basically, my family's income is ~25000 dollars per year, BUT that is like upper-class-high for my country.

Stanford is much more generous with applicants applying from third-world, or slightly impoverished countries, according to my unsubstantiated knowledge of the school. I may be wrong though.

If you really need money, it doesn't make sense to me not to apply for FA.

^ yeah but it's just that stanford is qute stingy towards internationals... though considerng stanford's emphasis on diversity they might be more generous towards applicants from poorer countries

If you are unable to afford it, it makes no sense not to apply for aid.

Judging by the quote "my family's income is ~25000 dollars per year, BUT that is like upper-class-high for my country" your country may well be a third-world, or an NIC (newly industrialized country), such as Vietnam or Thailand. Stanford is probably generous to your country. If your stats are not bad, why not apply for aid and see?
