Chances...can one grade kill them?

Hey Everyone!

I was hoping you guys could help me figure out my chances at a few schools as well as suggest any that you think would be a good match!

Here's the problem, my GPA is not what i'd like it to be:

3.3 unweighted, 3.9 weighted

I go to a very competitive public magnet school that has been consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country for at least a decade. I am in the IB program and take numerous APs every year (more about that later.) The problem is, I am without a doubt an english/history/philosophy/arts kind of student rather than math and science. That didn't cause me too much trouble until my junior year when I met the beast that is AP Calculus. Long story short, I got a D in the course. I have A's and B's in everything else, but i just couldn't get my head around calc. Is this going to destroy my chances at being accepted to a solid university?

Here are the rest of my stats:

SAT: 710 CR/690 M/640 W
ACT: Taking in October
Strength of Courses: IB program + with the exception of a few electives, all of my courses in high school have either been IB/AP/Honors courses (9 APs)

Extra Curriculars:
-President of Drama Club (former Publicity Officer)
-President and Founder of A Cappella Club
-President of Interact Club (former Vice President)
-Publicity Officer of Young Democrats
-Publicity Officer of Sandwich Club (Service Club helping to feed homeless in my hometown)
-Producer/Director of our 18th Annual Student Night of One Acts Plays
-Producer/Chairman of Fallfest (Student run talent show, big deal at my school)
-Won numerous awards for theatre and musical theatre performances at district and state levels.
-Lead in Charity Shakespeare performance two years in a row, lead in school musical
-National Honor Society
-National Spanish Honor Society
-International Thespian Honor Society

incidentally during my sophmore and junior years, my father was battling a malignant brain tumor. Thank God he is now doing fine, but for a time there was an insane amount of stress permeating throughout my household and my life in general.

My biggest question is: will that D in calculus keep me from getting into these schools:

Penn State - University Park
University of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh (REALLY WANT TO GO HERE!)
Maryland - College Park
Northeastern
UMass
University of Florida (instate and parents went there)

Thanks so much in advance!

PS. I have worked part time during my junior and now senior years and every summer since I was 14.

I am also involved in other EC's but I figured i'd just list the ones that I was MOST involved with...

anyone????

Bump Bump!

i think you'll be fine. i know people who've gotten into all the schools on your list with 3.3 UW, lower SAT scores, and less ECs. the scattergrams on my school's naviance confirm this. out of that list, i'd predict 4-6 acceptances for you.

I would doubt the one grade will kill anything.

you'll get into pitt ofor sure don't worry!

I think that D will that much for those schools, but you never know. a D is a D.

Ahem.
My take~

Situation #1:

If you improved that D, it'll be actually good that you had a D in the first place, because then the AO will think 'this kid works'

Situation #2:
That D got down to a F. Then you're in a bad situation...

Situation #3:
It was just a D. That won't really do much, especially since you're much more art-focused than math/science. Sure, it's a D of all things, but it won't matter that much since it's not like your forte or anything in the first place.

Plus, it sounds as if your family situation would add (and I really do sympathize!! I hope things are going well now ><), and the fact that you attend a great high school also adds.

So, solid chances in all of them (insert: I THINK. I'm not an AO, so my opinion is, after all, MY opinion)

thanks everyone for the opinions!

anyone else? i'd love YOUR opinion!

i think you should get into all or all but one of the schools that you listed

^which one??

not pitt!!! i want pitt so much!!!

I don't think you should be overly worried about it. Aside from that, your academic record seems fine and you have solid ECs. You still have a great chance of being accepted to most, if not all, of those schools. Good luck! :)

i say you have a 70% chance at pitt

I think you are in at all these schools and will get aide.

If you're so worried about that grade, why not take the AP course over through an online institution?

I wouldn't worry about it. You have a fairly good chance at getting into those schools. Something about admissions though. Universities want a solid student. You have a lot of extracurriculars . . . it makes it look like you don't have a focus. Universities like a well-rounded student body...with students who aren't..necessarily.

Regardless, you have a good chance of getting in. Atleast, as good of a chance as anyone else.
