chances @ cas

What are my chances at cas?

Junior
large competitive public, around 1300 kids in graduating class
top 15%
2020 sat(740 math,640 reading, 640 writing)
I take hardest courseload available(IB program)
EC's= band, bowling team, FBLA(10-11), Lit Crit, NHS, math club
over 200 hours of volunteer hours
and im indian

Thanks

I'm going to say being Indian will hurt you, and as I said on the other chances thread the accpetance rate for NYU is getting lower every year. Next year it might dip to 20% or below even. You have a decent shot however.

it wont be 20%. the change wont be that drastic, but it getting harder. increase your sat and get a job or soemthing and you will get in

bump.........

6.7UW, 4.1+W GPA, top 9% competitive CT public HS, SAT-M-720, V-590-W-650, ACT-29-Tennis team, Electric Bass, all honors and AP, good recs and essays, work-10+hrs wk-Your thoughts on chances at NYU CAS for this yr.?

you so do not steal someone elses thread - not cool!

sorry- didn't know about the emily post rules.

Your SAT is low. I don't want to be negative, but your chances are not excellent. I'd say below the normal accpetance rate.

apply ED with better SAT and GPA and should be able to get in. you still have a semester to go, so its not the end. good luck

How would he apply ED? I thought the poster we're talking about now said he was applying for this year?

my bad, i thought he was a junior applying next year. it will be difficult to get in then.

but he is in the top nine percent. Thats gatta count for something.

Accepted into gsp today

Vinniedafoo:: ok chance, just improve your SAT scores since NYU is progressively getting more selective. just take the SAT one more time to make yourself a better candidate. [your stats are already better than mine :) ]

Scrowman:congrats for GSP (or not? if you did not want to be GSPed)

I can't believe you guys think that OP will have a "difficult" time getting in. You should be a shoo-in (SATs and your ranking alone would put you with an average chance, but your ECs and impressive volunteer hours will definitely get you in).

Thanks Heathcliff- it's fine- in is in!

Y17K:

That's totally bogus. How can he possibly be a "shoe in"? His SATs and ECs are nothing impressive, he has no SAT IIs, and he is not in top 10% while the majority at NYU who were ranked are. Also, being indian isn't going to help him (unless by indian he means native american--than his chances just got a whole lot better).

How can you guys think he won't have a good chance of getting in and that his SATs are low?

The Class of 05 profile for NYU is: (includes Stern people. CAS is significantly easier to get into)

Test Scores Middle 50% of First-Year Students
SAT Reasoning Verbal: 620 - 710
SAT Reasoning Math: 620 - 710

He's in the top 25% for math and average for reading for first-year students. I realize you guys must feel proud that you go to NYU, but don't blatantly lie to make the school sound more prestigous than it actually is and discourage people along the way.

Vinniedafoo, you are a shoo-in for AT LEAST the general studies program with an excellent shot to get into CAS.

Also, there is no differance between being Indian and being White.

i wouldn't say that he is a shoo-in, not because of his qualifications but because of the admission process itself. Many prestigious colleges like nyu, u of chicago, northwestern..... make really random decision. They often take kids that absolutely doesn't and reject very well qualified applicants. You don't know what the admissions focuses on, so it is very hard to predict who gets in and who doesn't. But again, maybe there is a method to their maddness.

I plugged your data into my college-acceptance formula. You have a .3046 chance. Good luck to you.
