Chances Chances Chances

Couple months ago ppl said I had no chance at Carnegie Mellon University ED with a 3.1 UW.

WELL GUESS WHAT I GOT IN booya..

also i dunno how many ppl knew collegeconfidential(hollaratme) but they said he had no chance and he got into NYU College of arts n sciences.

So basically just apply and take a chance.

Wow, congrats on Carnegie. And whoever got into NYU, congrats to them also. What was their GPA by the way?

I think people don't realize that grades aren't everything, LOL. There are a lot of components that make up the application, so I'm guessing yours were pretty impressive. Nice job.

His gpa was a 88 UW, though he says it was a hard school. I believe my upward trend in gpa helped alot as I went 2.6/3.1/3.6 and now senior year I'm about 3.7.

Only 3 AP classes total and 1 honors. 1420 SAT I and 700/740/770 SAT II's. I bet my essays and recommendations and work experience(extraccuricular clubs and activities) had something to do with it.

Hold on, is freshman year counted in GPA?

For Carnegie, no. But that still gives me a 3.35 Unweighted while Carnegie's average is like 3.65 or 3.7.

I'm psyched because a lot of good schools don't count freshman GPA and mine was low. Not super low but low for the schools I'm shooting for. I've got the upward trend thing going on too, LOL.

Congrats on getting in CMU! You have no idea how close to identical we are in stats. I just submitted my application RD last night because I wanted to get first tri/semester grades in to up my GPA a bit :P. Anyway, same thing with the unweighted GPA. I sucked it up freshman year and don't even what to know what it was, sophomore 3.1 and junior I haven't calculated it but I basically got straight As and two B+s in AP US History.

1420 on the SAT I! 700V/720M. Physics: 770 Math IIC: 800, US History: 690 Writing: 690 (Yes, I suck at writing :P)

I know I got great teacher recommendations -- I gave it to the teachers who knew what I was capable of.

Wow, I guess I'm just relieved that I DO have a shot! I hope you didn't have too many public service things though, because I really don't have any :( As far as extracurriculars, I have Forensics, Math League (yes, I'm a hardcore math geek and the 800 shows it I guess), small theatre involvement in 10th grade and yeah. It also asked for hobbies on that one part and I put down a ton of things with computers.

Congratulations...

but you DID have a pretty good SAT score that made up for the low GPA.
