Chances, chances, chances

Basically littleatheist is an amazing individual, how do you find the time to go through all these?

Possible hook: Have spoken to Rugby coach and he will be writing a letter of recommendation supporting my admission to the school, I was ridiculously excited when I found this out haha

GPA: 3.70 on 4.00 Unweighted Scale (for an A you need 95-100...I think my weighted is above a 6 or something ridiculous)
Class Rank: 16th out of 250
School: Rhode Island Private Catholic High School
President's List each year
SAT Reading: 660
SAT Math: 680
SAT Writing: 710
Total: 2050
SAT II Biology: 670 (Taking Math Level II and Lit SAT II's in December)
AP Bio: 4, AP US: 4, AP Lang: 3, taking 3 more AP's this year
I have taken all Honors or AP courses since Sophomore year. I could not take AP courses until my Junior Year. I will have completed 6 AP courses by the end of senior year. I intended 7 but could not due to a scheduling conflict.

Plenty of diverse extracurriculars, though not a stand out in any.

Oh, you know, five minutes here, ten minutes there... it's a nice break from homework or when I have a half hour between classes :).

First of all... your stats. Your GPA is solid and is right at the 50% mark for accepted students, which is excellent. That being said, your SAT scores are just a little bit lower than ideal: they're in the ballpark, but they're below the 50% mark... ideally, you'd want to have a score of at least a 2100 (700s across the board). A score of 2050 doesn't kill your chances, but it might hurt them a little bit.

That being said, I think your extracurriculars will really help your chances. The fact that you have the rugby coach writing for you is fantastic... right now, Vassar is looking to build up its reputation in athletics and rugby is one of the sports that has done quite well in the past couple of years. I addition to this, the wealth and diversity of extracurriculars is also quite impressive... you look to not only have a lot of different involvements, but to have been consistent with them. Lastly, the fact that you've served in a variety of leadership and mentoring roles is also excellent... they're a further testament to how involved you've been in your school and community.

Overall, I would say that Vassar is going to be a semi-reach for you. Your SAT scores are a bit on the low side, but I really think your application is going to be helped by your extracurriculars, particularly rugby.

Thank you very much, littleatheist. Its nice to have someone on these forums who is honest and treads the fine line between realism and hope while upholding an aura which is not condescending. I was hoping for a 2100 on the last SAT's I took, but got a 2050 without prep which i was quite content with. Hopefully its not too much of a downfall. I'm taking the Math Level II SAT II in December which I hope will net a better score than my math score on the SAT.

I am considering applying ED II, but my financial situation calls for a focus towards aid. Do you know anything about the financial aid at Vassar and how good it is? And would ED II significantly increase my chances for admission, or at least increase them?

I know a bunch of people with financial aid here at Vassar, and just about everyone seems to feel like they got excellent deals from the school. Of course, take that with a grain of salt, because it would make sense that the students who got the best deals from Vassar chose to come to Vassar. That aside, I am under the impression that Vassar is known as a school that is generally quite generous with financial aid.

ED II might increase your chances a bit, but it's really hard to say... the school says that the early pools are "just as competitive" as the regular decision pool, but then again, a higher percentage of students are accepted ED I/ED II than RD.

Thanks for the advice, littleathiest.

Yesterday, I visited Vassar. I absolutely loved it - I walked around the campus including the majority of athletic facilities with the Rugby Coach after the standard campus visit procedures. I even got to meet a few of the Rugby players who gave me a better picture and understanding of the school - one was a freshman, the other a senior. Just talking to the students gave me a much better picture of how down to earth, relaxed, and friendly the campus vibe in general is. I will most certainly be applying Early Decision II...app has to be in tomorrow in order for my admissions counselor to process everything.

i was ready to do my ed2 at carleton when i suddenly realized i liked vassar a lot. so i am slowly abgling towards vassar. but there's a problem. my gc has already sent his packet to carleton and in there is the ED agrrement i have signed. however i have bot filled the common app yet. can i fill in in regular decision in my common app for carleton and make them agee that i want only to do regular decison. will i be then free to apply ed2 at vassar??????????

plz help

You can switch your Carleton app from early to regular as the deadline has not passed yet. But I don't think that Vassar would allow you to shift to ED 2, because the deadline was Jan 01.

is rugby a varsity sport?

no its a club sport but our teams are excellent and i am friendly with the coach. he is an awesome guy. our teams are very good and everybody who plays loves it.
