I won't really ask for chances, but ask for comments on my own chances. Something new for a change, eh? I'm open to suggestions/corrections/comments.
1. Caltech - Impossible without a 2300
2. Harvard - Always impossible w/o major leadership roles
3. Princeton - Very little without a 700 in CR
4. Dartmouth - I'd say around 30-40%
5. UPenn - I'd say a little reach/match, considering no aid
6. Duke - same as above
7. Rice - match, considering no aid
8. Carnegie-Mellon - match, again cause I'm paying
9. UC Berkeley - match for the same as above
10. UIUC - safety
11. RPI - safety
12. UCLA- safety
13. UCDavis - safety

Well duh. I just though my chances were zilch.
MIT was and will always be the original dream, but at this time of the year I don’t really feel like putting in the effort to make another application just to get rejected. I think a 3% acceptance rate for international students is low enough to keep practical people away.
I might sound like a hopeless pessimist but all the people who are unsure about their MIT chances never get in. You can’t fool MIT. MIT wants flawless brains, and that’s all they’re gonna take. The people who get in, and I have the honor of knowing one such person, are brilliant beyond belief. You look at them and realize MIT isn’t about that 100 marks in SAT or a lack of extracurriculars. MIT, for internationals, is about being outrageously smart. The person in question was an IMO gold medalist and an IOI bronze. Outrageous.
Honestly, there’s zero chances. I wont get into MIT. :D

Yeah… I’m rated 2048.
Major Awards… again… nothing MAJOR but some of those competitive exams that happen from time to time for IIT and that sort.

Well, considering RPI’s been sending pretty much everybody their Candidate’s Choice thing, and since I’m a 102%ile when it comes to SAT, i don’t see why not? Care to explain?

CMU, i didnt call a safety. For Computer Engineering, I understand it becomes quite difficult as well. I’d call it a match, because SAT-wise, I’m a 84.46%ile at Carnegie-Mellon. I’m also considering, no offence, that a large portion of Indian competition is eliminated for financial reasons.

My prospective major is totally undecided. My favorite subjects are Physics, Math and Computers, and I’m looking at either Comp Engineering, Comp Science, Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics and the like. I do have till sophomore year.

If you insist, my awards primarily include McMillan IAIS, FTRE and KVPY.

pixie: Well, it depends on what you have in IAIS. I have 1st in the State 4 times, in a pretty competitive state at that, not just an ‘Outstanding’ or something. And trust me, FTRE’s giving be a whole lot of people and is waaay tougher than any IAIS or KVPY. And FTRE’s an open exam too.

itsmylife: I tried long and hard to disagree with that, but fine… I give up. Dartmouth’s not AS competitive as Harvard/Princeton, but I think I might’ve put my chances a little too high. Dartmouth’s acceptance rate is almost double Harvard’s/ And Princeton seems to care a helluva lot about that 2300. Two of my seniors got waitlisted at Dartmouth with no major awards and moderately decent SAT scores, so I didn’t know. But okay, say 20% then?

Yeah, I do know FTRE’s given by a lot of people. A lot of people go for FIITJEE coaching and most of them take the test. Most of them aren’t of any commendable level. Half of my batchmates are enrolled in FIITJEE.

You’re wrong if you think FTRE is more important than KVPY, bdw. FTRE is a private exam which holds no recognition whatsoever(and I do know exactly how tough FTRE is) while KVPY is a nationally recognised exam. reporting FTRE is like reporting your rank in FIITJEE AITS which would be such a joke. We know in India how good a top 100 rank in FTRE is (good for you if you have a good rank in it), but internationally it holds little weight. It can only help you for JEE prep in knowing your standing. Oh and yes FTRE’s an open exam. It just means anyone who wants to pay 500 bucks and sit through it can. Slightly like GLYC.

Oh and FTRE may be wayy tougher than KVPY, but that doesn’t make it legit. It’s like saying I got 800’s in literature in Barrons but only a 750 in the real test. My barrons score is so much more legit since it’s Barrons after all.

I wasn’t saying IAIS is no good at all. I was just commenting on something we have in common.

That said, I think you are a competetive applicant.

Lol. I’m no good at CR, but your town sounds a tad aggressive. :)

I understand what you mean with the FTRE, but I still think they’ll consider it, if not give it that much value. Top 100 amongst tens of thousands isn’t exactly easy.

Competitive applicant. What a cliche! -_-
Okay. This might be of no good. Have you seen ‘The Social Network’?
What if I were to tell you that I created a FaceMash applet. No hacking or anything, but you get the general idea. Dunno about you, but I think an essay on that would kill it.

p.s. I am in the process of actually creating that. :D

I’m ashamed to say it, but i did not recognize a SINGLE of those exams.

FunkySATmonkey- uhh, how did you come up with the username?

I think your chances are as good as most. And I’d suggest applying to MIT. I know of someone who got in who wasn’t outrageously smart or anything. Don’t just not apply because you think you won’t make it. Your stats and EC’s make you competitive enough.

2) Chancing is regarded as a waste of time and they are inaccurate when done by fellow high school kids- a fact I have resigned myself to.
Anyway, what more do you want us to say? To give you percentages would be foolishness. We can only tell you about your cometetiveness. We cannot tell you the final decision. The students who give reviews like “In”, “Sure shot”, “Very good chance” are generally inexperienced. Such comments cannot be made for any school unless its a safety.
Why don’t you post this in the Chances forum to get more comments?

Competetive applicants generally only post chances threads to reassure themselves, fully knowing that none of what is said is to be taken seriously.
