Chances difference between applying for 9th and 10th

From the school information, we could find how many students apply for the school but we cannot find informtion which tells us how many students apply for 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th. For the scores and so on, schools are posting the average scores for the all admitted students. Do you think there will be more chances on the students who are applying for 9th than other grades? Normally, school has more opening for 9th than other grades. It will be good if we can share the information about the chances related with the topic. Thanks.

well 9th grade is when they open the most spots since they are accepting an entire graduating class. most schools do open up spots for 10th,11th, and even 12th grade. it really depends on the school how many spots. I’d say usually around 15 or more, but it depends on the school and the year. like i’m a girl applying to lawrenceville, and they recently built a brand new house, so they are doubling the number of FEMALE spots. the number of people applying IS less than 9th grade, but it is still very competitive for the small number of spots that they open in comparison to 9th gade admission.

Thanks for the reply. For Andover and Exeter, they have around 80 spots for 10th. Here is the class distribution from Andover.
Grade 12 - 335 (includes 24 postgraduates)
Grade 11 - 283
Grade 10 - 290
Grade 9 - 203

why are there more sophomores than juniors…

I heard Andover expelled a lot of kids recently for drug use. I’d guess a good number of juniors (11th graders) were asked to leave.

^^I think most of 15ish (?) kids who broke the rules were DC’ed but didn’t leave the school, but the graduting class is pretty big, so I’d guess they’ll enroll more students this year.

(Are the numbers in post #3 up-to-date?)

We have talked to many schools about 9th vs. 10th. For the vast majority, the acceptance rate is the same. There may be fewer openings for 10th grade, but fewer applicants as well.

St. Paul’s does not plan to add any juniors - the only openings there are from students who don’t return after 10th grade. They do not accept new seniors of PG’s.

For my daughter, she is willing to enter as a 10th grader or to repeat and indicated so on her applications - hopefully giving them more flexibility in her admissions.

That’s what I like about SPS. I wish all other schools could follow that practice. Admitting juniors and even more ridiculously admitting seniors as part of the planned enrollment just does’t make sense to me. Openings due to attrition or even to faciliate the special needs of a few are acceptable, but just for what purpose do boarding schools admit seniors and PG’s? I still can’t make sense of it. (after these many years in the BS scene)

for athletic purposes

Thanks Tinkerbell. Glad you asked!

mhmm, I know, but that’s not a good enough reason for me. It’s ridiculous to me that the school plans its enrollment for “atheletic purposes”, but it’s just me I guess - I’ve never been big on sports.

Some of it is athletic, but my son seriously considered applying for a PG year in order to take additional math and science classes. Many times students are just not ready for college and a PG year (or senior year) at a prep school is a great transition.
Schools we interviewed with for the PG year (although ultimately, he decided not to apply) told us that while many (if not most) of their PG’s are athletic, they look for students who are wanting to make an impact on the school - be it in a sport, community service, or whatever.

I also know of a coach at one school who only “recruits” repeat juniors or lower as he wants them on his team for more than one year. Same school, high number of PG’s for another sport. It all depends.

When we interviewed at SPS several years ago, they were “selling” the non-senior/PG aspect of the school as a good athletic benefit. Citing how bad it would be to be working your way up to a starter only to be sidelined by an incoming Senior or PG. They never mentioned any other reason in the interview (not saying there are not other reasons, just they were selling the sports one heavily to a non-recruited athlete).

DAndrew- They are also there academic reasons. Not all all students are ready for the academic rigors of college when they graduate, so it is a year to develop strong study skills and prove themselves. I am also aware that the Naval Academy will recommend some prep schools to defer a year before entry to the Academy. (I know of one student that had to get braces to fix his teeth before he could go to Navy. True story.)

You’ll also find international students using it as a transition year to US colleges and universities.

But that’s a compelling reason isn’t it? I think they didn’t mention other reasons because other reasons are more generic such as taking up the school’s limited resources for mainly “atheletics purposes”.

I am not sure given many or most PGs/seniors are atheletes, how much other contribution can they make to the school community in that one year, and how much loss there would be to the school without it? Like anything else, there are always some pluses and some minuses. Personally, I’d like to see the schools focus their resources and efforts on the students who have been there for 3-4 years, find them more opportunities and develop their “home grown” heroes “from scratch”.

DAndrew: Schools would prefer students for several years as well. Studies have shown the the longer a student is at the school, the more loyal they are and that translates into future giving. In the end, PGs can be used as a cash flow management tool. This is especially true at schools with higher attrition and/or larger student bodies.

^^Makes sense. BTW, among GLADCHEMMS, other than SPS, which ones don’t have PG’s, and which ones don’t have planned enrollment for grades other than 9th and 10th?

I’ll also add that is well known which schools admit Seniors and PGs. Ther ISL schools do not allow PGs, so they may be a better fit for those with concerns about PGs. However, you also have to look at which sports PGs play for each school. There are many varsity teams at “PG schools” without any PGs.

The PG discussion reminds me of the designated hitter debate between the AL and NL in baseball.

Looks like SPS, Hotchkiss, Groton, Milton and Middlesex don’t have PG’s. How about schools with no planned enrollment for grades other than 9th and 10th? Maybe we need to check each school’s website to find that info?

Hotchkiss has PGs. None of the ISL schools have PGs. There was a very long and interesting thread last year about the place of PGs, seniors, and junior repeats in schools. It didn’t start that way but morphed into it because of someone commenting that they would pick one school over the other because they don’t have PGs. It was interesting. I’ll do a cursory search…
