Farb, won't hurt to try, only cost ?$50. Put some thought into your Honor Code essay, maybe discuss in a separate essay why you want to go so far from home. Your geographic location will help, and they are big on community service (emphasize the cell phone drive) and sports. May be too late for this, but discuss the GPA issue with your GC - are there extenuating circumstances the she might mention in her rec, is your school extremely competitive, etc? Is there an upward trend in your grades? Good luck, I don't think you should completely forget about it.

If you really are interested in Davidson (or any other school) more than the others on your list of course you should apply ED 2; it will almost certainly give you some edge that would not exist with RD; it's true your GPA is somewhat lower than they may ideally want, but geographical divesity may help balance that out. In any case, you seem well qualified in other respects, though obviously chances are impossible for anyone on CC to predict accurately.

What kind of pull do the coaches at Davidson have? The coaches I've been speaking to there have told me to "Stop doing applications, you're in", but evidently the adcoms still have the final say. I did verbally commit in November and the coaches call every Tuesday, so contact is still there, but I'm still worried about my chances.

ecliptica, since davidson is no USC or U Texas - Austin I think that their say is not the be all end all, but they do like athletes and so i think they have some say and if your at the top of the list with a gpa above 3.2 you're in.

btw thanks cangel for those tips I think I did write a good essay on the honor code and I used the essay where you choose the topic of an achievement and spoke about the cell phone drive. would you mind reading over them? id be happy to email them to you if you think you could help me out some! :)

Since Farrbdog doesn't provide a clue about where his unweighted GPA puts him in terms of class rank at a very competitive public high school, I don't see any way in the world of estimating his odds at Davidson. For example, if he's top 5% of his class, then I would say the odds would be a lot better than if the 3.4 UW puts him outside the top 10%.

Saying that the school "doesn't rank" is meaningless. I guarantee his school provides some mechanism (usually a GPA distribution curve) that will allow colleges to figure out his approximate rank. That info will be a huge factor in admissions.

I think the chances at Davidson are extremely remote unless you have been recruited for tennis.

96% of Davidson's freshmen are in the top 25% of their high school classes. Your SATs are strong for Davidson (75th percentile), but that's going to actually work against you because they indicate that you probably underperformed academically in high school.

Best shot would probably be to contact the varsity tennis coach and see where you stack up viz-a-viz the prospects for their team. Gonna be tough, because tennis is pretty serious in the southeast and I'm sure Davidson gets some strong players.

Farbdogg71 - I see you're interested in Emory and Davidson. My daughter is a soph. at Davidson and my son was just accepted ED at Emory so I'll put in my 2¢ worth about applying to Davidson.
Your scores & extracurriculars are great. Applying ED will help some. And being from Washington will help (diversity). But what happened to your grades? I think you will have to address that issue, and maybe your school counselor can help you. I agree with interesteddad - tennis could be a way in at Davidson, if you want to play.
I think Emory will accept you, but you'll have to work very carefully on your Davidson app. Both schools are wonderful, though very different from each other (just like my kids).
By the way, what does "bump" mean???
