While my application is all said and done, I’d love to hear what everyone thinks about my chances (kind of last minute, but why not?)

I fell in love with Brown after visiting it back in october (this was before I crossed paths with Emma Watson). My grandfather, his brother, and two cousins went there (my alumni interviewer said Brown liked legacies). I go to a very small, progressive school in Vermont (my graduating class is 16). My GPA is around 3.7. I got a 2050 on my SAT (super scored) which isn’t too great, but I did get a 760 on critical reading. I’m in the National Honor Society.

Because of how small my school is, only one or two AP classes are offered every year, and a lot of the time, those are only open to seniors. As a junior, I took the AP World History test (without taking the class) and got a 4. This year, I’m taking AP Environmental Science and Ap Calculus AB. I’d venture a guess and say I have the most intensive schedule possible at my school.

I’ve been taking Chinese for all of high school, and I’ve maintained all A’s in that class throughout. After my sophomore and junior years, I spent 6 weeks in China studying the language and whatnot. I got a 660 on the Chinese SAT II. I’m also taking a supplemental (read: completely optional, not contributing to my HS GPA) Chinese class at the University of Vermont.

Other than that, none of my classes are particularly special.

As for extra curriculars, Volleyball has been the biggest one for me. I’ve been on the team since freshman year, and I was captain for my junior and senior seasons. I got the commitment award both my sophomore and junior year (don’t know what will happen for the senior season yet). Sophomore year, my team got 3rd at states, junior year, 2nd, and senior year, 3rd again.

I’ve been really interested in photography throughout high school. Freshman year, I got a job as assistant to a local photographer, and I’ve held that position ever since. Junior year, two of my photos won awards at the state level. A vast majority of yearbook pictures, for the last three years, have come from me. I helped start a photography club at my school.

Other ECs: Chorus member, various community service projects, worked as a writer for a technology blog, worked as a camp counselor for a summer

As for recommendations, the one from my Chinese teacher is guaranteed to be stellar, and I’m expecting a not-quite-as-stellar-but-really-good-nonetheless recommendation from my Volleyball coach/science teacher/advisor (all three are the same person).

For my all of my essays, I focused on my love of Chinese and politics- I think I showed good consistency and commitment.

I think I did well on my alumni interview. I stressed my interest in politics, international travel, art, and volleyball. Overall, I think that my performance was good. My interviewer said Brown puts very little emphasis on the AI, but other sources have told me otherwise, so I don’t know how that will factor in.

Why Brown? I like the sense of community I felt while on campus (despite the size of the school). That was a definite plus given the size of the school I’m coming from. Furthermore, the open curriculum was one of the things that initially made me fall in love with the school.

Brown is definitely a reach for me, but do you think I’ve got a shot? Thanks for reading!
