Chances ED

Please take into account the fact that I will be EDing this fall.

SAT Scores: 2170/2400 or 1400/1600 Essay 10 [700+ each section]
[Northwestern IS taking Writing into account this year. They said so.]
SAT II Scores: 800 Math IIC, 700 Bio M (will re-take in October)

GPA: 4.54 Weighted
3.88 Unweighted

Rank: Top 5%-10%. We are actually "unranked" though.

EC's: Very involved in multiple activities. This includes like science fairs, robotics [very time-consuming...], music competitions, student council etc.
Recs: Will be great, possibly have a professor at CMU write a rec.
Essays: Should be good.
Awards: Regional awards in science, robotics, music, school awards, Rensselaer Medal. Predict National Merit Commended only... I sent National Merit stuff to Northwestern.
Leadership: Music- concertmaster, robotics- captain, secretary, student council -representative, school clubs-officer, and other school-related activities.
AP Scores: 4's and 5's on 6 AP Exams.

NOT an URM.
Go to a Private School.
Middle-class, won't ask for a lot of financial aid.
Will send supplement for music.
I HAVE visited Northwestern = demonstrated interest.
[Double] Major: Economics and Biology at Weinberg CAS

Looks pretty good. Remember, ED is like maxing out the "demonstrated interest" concept, and I'm not sure demonstrated interest is even such a heavy factor- I'd not requested information or visited when I applied...

I think you got a great shot. ive seen you post on this forum and those posts really show a genuine and insatiable interest in NU. just put alot of effort into your essays and make sure that interest shines through. gl. take an interview (idk if they do it ED round)

Awesome shot ED

Thanks for answering!

Any suggestions in terms of how to improve my app?

imo, you are pretty much set for ED. you could always retake your SATs again

they're not considering the writing section, btw. they said so in the info session i attended on monday.

Oh, darn. I talked to them in March, and they said they probably would. Eh. That sucks for me.

bumping this up

Bumping one last time.

Any recommendations for where to apply regular if I don't get in ED? :(

I'm thinking about the following:
NYU
Cornell
Upenn
CMU
UChicago
JHU
USC
UC Berkeley
UCSD
UCLA

UChicago doesn't really fit in well with the rest of the schools on your list, but if you like it, you might as well keep it on.

Have you considered BU?

Yeah, Chicago doesn't really fit in, but I figured that since their economics is #1, I should apply. BU? I guess I have the lower UC's [not listed] as my safeties, so I don't know if BU would be a good idea.

I'm thinking of adding either Emory or Vanderbilt to the list. Not sure yet.

I was about to mention Emory/ Vanderbilt too, as well as McGill.

I thought of BU because it's large, urban, and has lots of students studying different things at different schools. I don't know how good their sports are, but I know BU people who are rabidly devoted to supporting the Terriers. They play good hockey.

The thing about Chicago is that you're getting much more than a strong econ program when you attend-- you have to take a core curriculum, and you are in an environment where students are strongly, strongly devoted to their studies. There isn't as much student life as there is at the other schools you mentioned, but there definitely is some.

Northwestern's ED acceptance rate is around 40%, I know that number isn't very revealing without other factors, but i think you have a great shot ED. (also this way you can slack off for the rest of senior year ;))

I'm pretty sure you will get in ED so I doubt you really need to worry about applying to other schools :)

Thanks for the support. Hopefully things will go atleast somewhat smoothly. I just need to re-take my SAT II Bio M and hope that my essay turns out okay xD

If I were to add Vanderbilt or Emory to my list for regular decision, which one would be a better choice for my major?

personal preference. i think vanderbilt might be a little (maybe a lot) more similar to northwestern, and someone might have to attest to this but i think it might also be better represented at top IBs and consulting firms, etc. You're an economics major so that's what you want to do, right?

Yup, I'm interested in consulting. I was leaning more towards Vanderbilt as well. Of the things I have read about Emory, most weren't so positive for some reason.

for consulting, maintain a 3.7+ and suddenly this list becomes very relevant:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=235587&highlight=consulting+core

and sorry, looks like i was wrong about vanderbilt, while both will be recruited, emory is a core school for one of the five top consulting firms, while vanderbilt is not a core school for any of them

Northwestern definitely does pretty well. 4/5 of the firms! :)
